Howdy all,
My father has a 3.0 td patrol, '00 model, approx 200000 km and he rang me today telling me that 5th gear failed completely.
I have spent about 2 hours going thru threads relating to this and it became clear that this era seem to suffer g/box failure more than others, but I couldn't determine if the posts I found related to 3.0s as
well as 4.2s(they seemed to be mentioned quite frequently).
despite this vehicle age/klm,should he pursue Nissan for the repair?
At the moment he is at Port Lincon (SA) and time is a bit of an issue, and being a long way from home you seem to lose a lot of bargaining power

Hello Shane D (Qld)
Not real sure of my grounds here so No Names at the moment - I know of a reputable 4x4 Mech some 300 + k Nth of Pt Lincoln - on the way home to Qld maybe. He serviced our 4x4 for the year we had it whilst still in
Woomera! Knows his stuff, very reputable. In fact drove a Nissan himself. If permitted, I can forward the details - although we have not been in need of his
services since Dec 1999 after which we moved to
Adelaide.
Cheers - Mobi

I don’t think any Auto manufacture would do a Warranty on a car with 200,000K on the clock,
well and truly out of warranty.

Hi Exploder,
Shane is not after any warranty work, just help for his father who is a long way from Home. That is the whole reason why he posted the
forum, to try and if anyone could advise on ways of helping his dad.
Stephen

despite this vehicle age/klm,should he pursue Nissan for the repair? Hi there Stephen, unless I read it the wrong way I think he was also leading to the question should nissan help out here for repairs cost wise as he has read on here about it being a problem with 5th gear. Should Nissan pay up NO, he has done 200k +. As far as some one helping his dad out to get the vehicle repaired at his own cost then I hope some one is able to recomend some one and he gets his vehicle repaired and gets home safely. Looks like he's up for a few $$$ before he's going anywhere. Regards Steve M

Hi Shane,
given that the failure is due to a known design fault with the gearbox, it might be worth a try pushing Nissan, even for a part-cover of the costs. They were covering failures up to about 5 yrs. My Dec2000 4.2 was covered under my extended warranty.
There is a Nissan dealer in
Port Lincoln, and one in Pt
Augusta.
Nissan Aust can be contacted on cdetails@nissan.com.au, with attention to Val Davis.
Good luck
Gerry

Hi Shane,
I used to work with a very good technician. He went over to
Port Lincoln, and as of last week was still over there. The down side is that he works for the Toyota Dealership. Ask for Rob Gill and he will be able to get things sorted out. When he was living in
Burra, he was the RAA agent, as
well as the local GMH Dealer. He is a great guy and knows his work.
If you cann't any other help, I know Rob will be able to get your dad out of trouble.
All the Best
Stephen

My box failed just before 100 k ,
As with you dad we were far from home (
Perth )and had no bargaining power , either you pay for it or you sit it out for a while .
The only problem we had was the dealership we went to wanted our money as
well as the warranty money from Nissan Australia. However Nissan Australia refunded our costs after I wrote them a letter an explained what happened . They have a modification kit for the gearbox so they cant really deny whats going on .
I would recommend going to a Nissan dealer to get this fixed , the only reason I thought of this is if you have issues later on the other side of Australia , ' Bobs 4wd repairs ' probably couldnt care less , but at least you have a bit of a come back on Nissan
It doesnt matter how old something is if it poorly designed it is not fit for the pupose intended , just because 90% of people dont break the 5th gear going to the shops doesnt mean there is not a problem .
I would contact Nissan Australia head office asap . There was a post in the last couple of days with the contact details .
Glenn.

5th gear might have failed but is the Nissan still driveable? If there are bits and pieces flaotong around in the bottom of the box then he may have trouble. If not, he should be able to drive home?
Cheers

if your father can ill get the vehicle to a nissan dealer, two reasons,1 try to get nissan assistance, you never know if you dont try,2 the replacment parts to fix 5th gear are different part numbers to the orignal parts.there is more to replace then the fifth gear, and doing the job at a nissan dealer you will have warranty on parts and labour.good luck.

We found the nissan dealership in pt lincoln very helpful when we called in there for spares a couple of years ago - better than at a lot of other
places.

I would like to thank all who contributed helping to work thru this drama, as it turns out we have relatives down there and they pointed him in the right direction in regards to workshop.
After they pulled out the oil it quickly become apparent that it was not a quick fix and the decision was made to source another g/box,from a wrecker in
Adelaide.
By the time they freight it over and fit it will cost around $3500 ,althuogh it is a second-hand box it has only done and will come with transfer and should be back on the road late this arvo. There where signs of trouble that went ignored and looking back would've done things different ,sooner(haven't we all).
He wont bother Nissan about this because of age/km,just happy the be going again
thanks again for everyone's input
Shane
