Yep there is heaps of stuff on the site re the area.

Anyhow the Great sandy is south of the Road across to Broome probably about 200 ks. The Canning goes through it, North South.

Your 3 or 4 months might be a bit short unless you're looking for a reason to divorce your other half.

Heaps of planning needed for the Canning journey and you would want to be in a group.

That is an epic trip and you will need the 5 years to plan it out!
We have done parts of it
Darwin to Cairns via Roper Highway and Cape York 11 weeks
Kimberly 6 weeks
CSR and Gun barrel 4 weeks
less say 2 - 3 weeks getting to starting points

So we would need say 18 - 19 weeks. If you really wanted to see everything it would take years.

There is a lot to see on the way but highlights for us would be

Cape Melville/Lakefield
Cobald Gorge
Lawn Hill NP
Litchfield NP
Jasper Gorge (?sp)
GRR
Mitchell Falls
Emma Gorge
CSR
Purnululu NP (Bungle Bungles)
Cape Leveque

You could easily back track from Broome on the blacktop and duck down the Tanimi track, then CSR, Gunbarrel Highway, Heather Highway, Great Central Road to Alice. Permits are currently required for some of these areas. As already mentioned CSR requires sufficent preperation and comms ie HF or Sat Phone, particularly if you are on your own. Plenty of people do the CSR on there own There are people out there on the main track but most of them are not in a position to help much and the traffic really thins if you move any distance off the track.
