Yep, wanting to go from Nowra our trustly little hole of a home to the top then travel
cairns -
broome using the
savannah way.......what
places would we actually go through and do we touch the great sandy at all??? My maps are stilll in boxes somewhere.....not planning on doing it for 5 yrs so it gives us plenty of timeto save up...the planning is just the fun of it!!!
whats the chances of touching the canning at the same time on the way back down from
broome???
how much time you reckon it'd take? we thought maybe 3-4 months......leave end of may...back by the end of sept.....
by then the 4b will be diesel .... yep gonna give her a change......

Hello
Laura
Why don't you do a search of the archives to find out all the anwers. It will probably take you 5 years to do that and by then you will know all the anwers. :-D

Do I detect just a hint of ...umm..err..
well something.
By golly that's one ugly looking tyre casing there Willem. Can of black paint and a few ends snipped would improve the looks no end (and wouldn't do a thing for the tyre of course :))

Laura,
Yep there is heaps of stuff on the site re the area.
Anyhow the Great sandy is south of the Road across to
Broome probably about 200 ks. The Canning goes through it, North South.
Your 3 or 4 months might be a bit short unless you're looking for a reason to divorce your other half.
Heaps of planning needed for the Canning journey and you would want to be in a group.

Hi
Laura,
That is an epic trip and you will need the 5 years to plan it out!
We have done parts of it
Darwin to
Cairns via Roper Highway and
Cape York 11 weeks
Kimberly 6 weeks
CSR and Gun barrel 4 weeks
less say 2 - 3 weeks getting to starting points
So we would need say 18 - 19 weeks. If you really wanted to see everything it would take years.
There is a lot to see on the way but highlights for us would be
Telegraph track
Cape Melville/Lakefield
Cobald Gorge
Lawn Hill NP
Litchfield NP
Jasper Gorge (?sp)
GRR
Mitchell Falls
Emma Gorge
CSR
Purnululu NP (Bungle Bungles)
Cape Leveque
You could easily back track from
Broome on the blacktop and duck down the Tanimi track, then CSR,
Gunbarrel Highway,
Heather Highway,
Great Central Road to Alice. Permits are currently required for some of these areas. As already mentioned CSR requires sufficent preperation and comms ie HF or Sat Phone, particularly if you are on your own. Plenty of people do the CSR on there own There are people out there on the main track but most of them are not in a position to help much and the traffic really thins if you move any distance off the track.

Laura, if you want to *touch* the great sandy. try sleeping along the Kidson Track in a tent. :))
