Hi Forumites
Planning to go to Tasmania after Xmas or after New Year. Left arranging it a bit late. We can get into some caravan parks but would prefer not to book to allow flexibility.
Can anyone suggest
camp spots / parks where we could go to, and would have a fair chance of getting in?
Doesnt have to be caravan parks, we're
well equipped. Main limitation is we have an on-road caravan. Hoping to travel right around but not fussed if we don't get to see some parts.
thanks, JD

We left
Melbourne on 27 of December ,4 years ago ,and we travelled around Tassie in three weeks time, with our own tent, all caravan parks were clean ,and not to busy,no bookings required at that time, check couple of caravan parks ,just make a couple of calls, as simple as that.Sorry one spot was full,Frycinet National
Park, but in not to far distance ,a small privately own CP,at no limit,a litlle bit dusty.
Good luck, Adamant

Hi JD,
Get yourself a copy of Camps Australia Wide 3 (or 4 or 5 if it's been updated...) We've used the Tassie chapter heaps in the last few months down here. Plenty of choices, although January is absolutely peak season and everywhere will be busy. Buy yourself a one or three months
Park Pass on the ship and save a lot in National
park fees too. Still have to pay for
camping in some NP's but so far it's been $3.30 /person/night (including HOT showers!)
Many of the coastal parks here have a large
population of 'annuals' - vans permanently parked on sites but only occupied during holiday periods - and they'll all be full in January. So, were planning on sticking to the quieter inland
places during Jan.
You may still have to book ahead in popular
places Like
Port Arthur,
Strahan, etc. but it'll be worth it. It's a great place to travel and explore. If you will have time to get off the Tourist Trail, also buy a copy of Chris Boden's "4WD Tracks in Tasmania" on the ship - lots of interesting bush tracks and out of the way
places.

Just to clarify: As it's such a small place you can leave your van at a
park and cover a lot of the bush tracks, etc. on day trips. Also, we've yet to find an
unsealed road (as opposed to bush track) that we would not take a normal on-road caravan on. So far, all have been
well-maintained and just about corrugation-free.

Would like to endorse the comments by Ian , the great thing about Tassie is the proxomity of scenery , yes in a lot of cases leave the caravan at the CP or wherever and do day trips

What Ian has said would certainly suit us. Fewer setup's.
Friend has Camps Australia Wide 3. Great idea. Will borrow that for sure.
thanks all, JD

Hi JD,
We are going to Tassie and have booked on the Spirit of Tasmania on the 27th January. You really should check the bookings on the boat as there was quite a lot of bookings and not many metres left on the boat for cars and vans. We will be there for 10 or 11 weeks. Wife and I are looking forward to the trip. If you see a white Pajero and a Roadstar Trackvan come and say Hi.

Rang Spirit of Tasmania this morning. There are still a few
places - should be ok if we confirm in next few days. Will look out for you - we're Dark Silver patrol towing Coromal poptop. JD

Hi Tassie-bound people
I lived in Tas for 5 years. In case you decide to
camp out in the Tas high country - just be aware that in January/Feb, the weather can change from blue skies to snow and white-outs in half a day. It can also be scorching hot and the sun seems to burn harder and faster than on the mainland.
But: have a good time!! Ray

Yeah take cold weather gear. I had snow on Mt
Wellington on Boxing Day and 10C at Mt Field NP later the same day, one year. Think it was 1996.
Be prepared.
