G'day Folks, I've just heard on the radio that the Whitfield - Cheshunt road is closed and the 2 fires that were burning have joined. Given the forecast for strong winds soon it may once again continue to Mt Buffalo. You may wish to reconsider plans of heading that way for the next week at least.

They have closed the Whitfield Cheshunt Road for all except locals. Also closed is the Rose river Road past Chehunt, and the road up to Lake William Hovell. I think the road over the dam wall at Lake Buffalo is also closed. Been advised locally that they do not advise going into that area for at least a week.

Geez John, it looks bad up that way. I'm glad we were there last week and not this week.

Des, so am I. Really pretty it was too up along the
King River. Love to have stayed longer but a real danger being there now obviously. May have been then had we had a dry thunderstorm.
Hope you folk are
well, got the "arrived home safely" message thanks

Went up the Butcher Country Track on Saturday and they were fighting fires there. So thought I'd head off up to the Pinicales on Sunday and couldn't see a thing for smoke. The
Ranger said he had 23 fires under observation but again the smoke was so thick they were hard to see. Talk to a couple of guys who were in Wonnangatta at the time of the lightening and their account of the strikes and subsequent fire glow in the night.
Ranger says Zeka is also alight. Head off down
Billy Goat Bluff and up Conways and into
Talbotville and no one at
Talbotville....most unusual. Hear bulldozer driver on UHF ordering more fuel to widen McMillans....he was close....time to get out and go home a day early. Back home I hear they are fighting fires on Conway's. It seems to be all over the place and it is just so dry and ready to go.
IMHO there is just no point being up there at all at the moment but if you do, make sure you have a plan that will get you out quickly particularly if the wind comes up from the north.

The
Woods Point road too is under restriction with a sizable blaze on Mt Terrible. Seems last weeks lightning storm has lit up a large proportion of the High Country that missed out in 2003. Local rangers suggested that alot of the mountain areas may have to be closed until a decent rain comes through.
Cheers Craig...
