I was in the Simpson over
Easter this year and was amazed at the amount of drift , I had some fun with the very last Dune before the K1 T
intersection [no red light Camera's there yet] And I think Willem done some digging there too so I have a couple of photo's from Google that would be before
Easter ,If you have Google Earth paste this Co-Ord into it and it should put the numbers 50 meters south of the crossingm or see 2 pics here Site Link
If anyone has a Garmin GPS ie Quest with Nav-7 and has kept track files in the Garmin Folder reopen the track onto the maps and then click on view/view in Google Earth and watch what happens

Very interesting.
How long do you think it takes to cover the track right over?

I don't really know but the sand was moving all the time I was out there with strong winds blowing, One would need to
camp a few days and watch it, I would presume though that drift got got there over a couple of months or more

Depends on what distance of track you expect to be covered. The track is quite exposed until you get to the mobile dunes. There, it gets covered over really quickly, but once you get to the top, you can usually tell where the track goes down the other side. It is when you are facing the vertical dune (travelling East) that finding your path over the dune gets interesting - a bit like out at
Twilight Cove or Bulbunyah
Sand Dunes - you need to go in the right general direction and find the track on the other side.
We stopped and watched the cyclists during the
Simpson Desert Cycle Challenge coming to the last mother dune and going over it. Their steps were covered in just a few of their steps (there's no riding up 3-4 metre vertical faces).
There are some galleries of what it was like - see Day 3 and the Support Vehicle links on this page: Site Link
The wind was ferocious, and even vehicle tracks were hidden in a few minutes - it was incredible.
Cheers
Andrew.

I've travelled up the K1 Line this year and last year, and turn off to check out a couple of those dunes. Although they are soft, at least theres no problem getting a run up to them. I guess I also had the advantage of coming from the east and then following my own tracks back. Certainly not the easy way out of
the desert like it used to be. And it will be interesting to see how soft the sand will be next year!

Yep was the only dune that stopped me during the entire trek which included 200km of Off Track into the NT. A bit of digging around the
wheels, floor mats and 9psi saw me extricate meself without too much fuss :-D

9 PSI amazing Willem, do you carry a PRT? Portable rescue tree or a sand anchor?
And do you run rim locks?

Wot?
No PRT..thats only for winching. Have a winch and if necessary can bury tyre to wimch off.
Bead locks...I ask you....... Vy? You don't spin the
wheels, you just let the truck idle out.
Too easy
