Hi Everybody
been reading the threads started by Brian and synthetic oils....some interesting and different opinions. Does anyone have some good ideas on what I can do by way of additives too maybe solve my oil problem? The motor on my 89 Cruiser VX has done about 350k always used Mobil Delvac MX or similar. Blowing a bit of black smoke and uses about 1L of oil or a touch more per 1000k's. No oil leaks and still runs like a charm. I have never done anything to the motor apart from changed the oil regularly about every 5-7k. Still sounds like new.
I am a bit concerned about putting synthetic oils into an older motor.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

cheers

Geoff

Don't put synthetic oils in older engines as the oil is meant for closer tolerance engines and at 350K yours won't be close. I used CEM in our 80 series and it gave it a good flush out. The oil stays cleaner longer or should I say "doesn't go black in seconds" after the oil change but does darken as the next change comes around. It also clears carbon from the rings and that may help the oil burning. If you have black smoke then that will be unburnt fuel not burnt oil. Take it to a good diesel mechanic for the injectors to be "done" and a tune up. I have no connection with CEM except as a happy customer.

I would be wary of engine flushes at 350000k.
They are usually made from a detergent or a solvent .
With a high miler the sludge build up around the rings maybe all that is stopping it from a major blow by and the use of a engine flush can bring it on.

It happened to me on a oLd holden V8,but I have also heard of others having the same story.
I would do the injectors and change to a thicker oil.

why change to a thicker oil unless the oil pressure is down or motor rattly?
agree about the injectors for sure though. And dont bother with "injector cleaner in a bottle" crap. Until they invent one that can test the pop pressure and for damaged nozzles, they are next to useless (at least as a substitute for a scheduled injector service)

Depends on what product you use to flush , did the 80series turbo diesel with CEM at 360,000 klm , normal oil and filter change uses 9.8lt , used the CEM at recommended qty ,12lt of oil and crap came out , now no smoke ,no leaks ,stuff works., oil stays "clean" in between changes instead of turning instantly black.
