Hi all,

Just had a Cyclops alarm installed in my 2004 Patrol.

Great unit - but since installing last week, I have had 3 experiences of the sub tank error light coming on - and needing to disconnect the battery and reconnect to get it to work again.

I have experimented a bit - and it may or may not relate to when I turn the interior lights off (I do this our of habit so that don't get left on when camping (2 kids).

Anyway - the installer is great, and was happy to recheck all of their installation on Saturday morning and is experimenting with me also.

I just cannot see what the subtank electrical work has to do with the door/interior light connections.

Any suggestions or previous experiences much appreciated.

Cheers,

Alan

G'day Alan,

Not sure whether it has anything to do with the interior lights, but many of us GU owners have cured our sub-tank light issue by adding a reasonably heavy (say 8mm) cable between the body and the chassis. As it comes from the factory, there is very little earthing to the chassis.......only the sub-tank fuel transfer pump. As stuff is added (like trailer brake controllers, cruise control, alarm systems etc) that are earthed to the chassis by the installer, then the poor little wire that earths the sub-tank pump, is being expected to act as the earth for these other gadgets.

At least that is the story as far as I understand it to be......some others might be able to provide a better explanation.

In my case I earthed the 2nd battery terminal (negative of course) to the chassis....there is a captive nut just on the top of the chassis rail near the turbo.

I agree here .. sounds like too much current for the circuit he has wired it to.
separate the circuit with an own fuse
good luck

Alan,

I had problem with the main fuel guage on my GU. It never really showed full and fell to 75% full only a few kms after a 100% fill.

I put a new, heavy duty earth from the cranking battery to the firewall (near the wiper motor) and that fixed it. It also fixed the CD player as well. It used to give me error codes all the time. Doesn't now.

I've yet to fit another chassis/body earth as Roachies advises above. I need "a round tuit" fer that job.

Hi Alan,

As mentioned above, the Patrol is sensitive because there is no direct earthing between the chassis and the body. Pic below shows where I connected earth strap (under FPS door) from chassis to body, following similar advice on this forum.

Thank you to everyone who responded. I printed out the relevant parts of the feedback (after making it all anonymous - removing names, rig etc) - and gave it to my local Nissan dealer this morning (it is in for a service today anyway). They were very interested and I am hoping they will wire something along the lines of the suggestions.

I will soon find out - when I pick up the car this afternoon.

Regards

Alan.

Hi again,

Just thought I would let everyone know what Nissan said or did about this.

They said it is never an issue when fitted with Genuine Nissan accessories (as they earth it taking this into account - ie not earthed to the Chassis) Surprise / Surprise. Given all the accessories that are wired exactly as Roache suggested (to the chassis), they agreed with the concept of running an additional cable.

Hugh - for some reason they drew a big cross through your picture and said they would not do this, and have run a cable somewhere else. I picked the car up late, so have not had time to inspect their work yet - hope to do this today.

Anyway - since having it done, no sub-tank light issue. Problem would appear to have been solved. Thanks again (the knowledgebase from users on this forum never ceases to impress me).

Cheers

Alan
