Hi gang.. an unusual question. I'm looking for a new 4WD. Mainly to be used for long road trips around QLD carrying stock for my wife's business. (She works with breast cancer patients in the area of prostheses) Looking for a lot of carrying space with the ability to tow the CT and visit Fraser for recreation. I have had a string of 4WD vehicles in the past starting with my new Series 3 Land Rover in 1974.. so I'm not new to this area. However I am interested in other peoples opinions or experiences. The basic Pajero looks a little crude inside.. my current Hyundai Tucson looks a lot smarter with interior trim etc. The new Exceed seems rather nice inside as does the Jeep Commander. I guess I'm interested in issues such as reliability and long term running costs etc. Also the break even point for the extra expense of a diesel over petrol.

Any comments greatly appreciated.

Cheers

The Commander.

Because it's a Jeep.

and if you don't understand, you never will!

(this is from the owner of Toyota, Nissan and Jeep)

If you live next to an authorised jeep service centre , have lots of time on your hands or have a second vehicle and dont have a left foot because there aint no room in there for it , then i would say yes get the jeep .

The diesel exceed will give you the lowest fuel consumption and service costs.
If I dive at about 95klm/h the Pajero will get 7.5 litres per 100 klm. At 110klm/h 8.5 up to 10 depending on load. In the city I get 10 litre / 100 klm. Towing a 2.5 tonne van at 90klm/h I get 14.7 litre/100klm.
Bottom line it is up to your preference but I have thrown what my experience is to either help or confuse.

I think you maybe fudging those figures maybe.

Maybe you should post this on Overlander forum with all the 100 series cruiser owners getting 10 or 11l/100k ;-))

Hi Mark,
Jeeps do very poorly in any reliabilty surveys. Ref (THE DOG AND LEMON GUIDE) . Usually they rate last ot 2nd last. Mind you I still like JEEPS just would not spend my hard earned on one

When you post something on here asking for opinions on makes and models, it usually turns into a "make" war.

So here's another talking point - - Hyundai Terracan crdi, currently can be had for $29990 ( plus on road )

But please don't bag it ( heard it all before ) just pointing out another option ?

AS for diesel versus petrol, depends on the make, sometimes diesel can be had for only a small price increase over petrol, and on the two makes you asked about the diesels are the pick ( if the costs work in your favour )

Another thing to consider is if you want to add accessories, what can you get and how available are they for each vehicle?

In this regard it would have to be the Pajero the winner of the two vehicles suggested. But on an Exceed or Commander would you need to accessorise them??? they come with everything don't they? LOL!! (they both got a lot more than mine and your trucks but still wouldn't swap yours or mine for the commander but probably would for the Paj)

I think both vehicles have there pros and cons but the cons are mostly personal preference and nothing to stop a purchase. Mitsubushi has a larger dealer network and that may or may not be important - both these have high tech electronics so a road side fix for some things ain't going to happen.

Not knowing your specific circumstances, I couldn't pick one over the other - you need to test them out and make your own choice - as some else has said questions like these start brand wars - I support another make but you didn't ask about it so I will not mention it.

The Exceed and the Commander will probably do what you want - go for what you like.

Mark,

Are the Pajeros you've seen the NP model, or the brand spanking new NS model that have only hit dealers in the last month?

New NS Pajero has an option electronic rear diff lock for something like $500 :D

Well... lots of interesting opions here. The Brand new Pajero does have the diff lock. Priced at $500 in the 4WD mags but actually $1000 from Mitsubishi.

It is a hard choice.. the Jeep has more room (slightly) in the rear and i must admit the diesel does sound good. The Kia Sorrento has the most room in the rear but no diesel option as yet. I do like Hyundais (drive one now) but would like more safety features than the Terras offer.

I think it might simply come down to who will do the best deal.

"Here's a cheque for 60K... can you supply the vehicle on the road?"

Might try this approach in January.

Many thanks for all your thoughts.

Cheers

I dunno what Pajero you were in but more room in the Jeep !!! not the one i sat in and aspecially the cargo section the Paj had miles more room.

My opinion is the same as Garrycol, pick the one you like, you should know which it is, just ask your missus which one you've been talking about the most !!!

Usually a sign.

Hi Baz.. the area or room I was referring to was the total load area with all rear seats stowed.. got the info from Jeep and Mitsubishi web sites. If correct jeep has more room.

My otehr half says i have been talking about the new car so much she has switched off me.....

That's life.

Cheers

Hi all

owned 2 Pajero's over 11 years of driving - highly reommend them for:
-drivability
-reliability
-economy - petroland diesel both veery good

just converting to LC 79 to tow van and desert trips but Paj's have been good to me and ideally suited IMHO for the roles you stated in original post Mark.
