hi im just about to put in a lock rite in the front of my surf it has inside 4wd will i need to get free wheeling hubs,
the vacume operated swiych looks like it engages and disengages the left half axle i think would this not cancel the diff lock effect or do i still need to get the hubs

Yes you will need to fit freewheeling hubs.
An ARB is a much better choice as it can be engaged only when required whereas "lokkas" are permanent and noisy buggers.

nothing wrong wit my lokka, personal choice $800 compared to $2500 plus the problems it has with purge valve and not locking or unlocking when you want to.
You can also turn the steering around corners and still have traction, where you can't do this with the ARB
Not everyone will have this problem,
Lokka is the better choice. :-)

Dont you love a scare monger!!
My Lokka doesnt make a sound and I love the fact I can turn corners while 4wdriving without having to keep turning it on and off all the time!!
oh and it cost me $500 and one day to fit myself hahahahahhahahahaha

I tried a lokka in a 60 series front i had and found them a pain! they never unlock when turning underpower, the theories there but in practice no, you may as
well weld the centre solid and get the same results.

" You can also turn the steering around corners and still have traction, where you can't do this with the ARB"
" I love the fact I can turn corners while 4wdriving without having to keep turning it on and off all the time!! "
Are you two for real !!!
Turn the ARB on and its fully locked until you choose to unlock it.
That's the big benefit of the ARB as it can also be unlocked when full lock mode is not necessary and it returns the front diff to open centre so steering is not affected in normal 4wd situations.
Unlike "lokka's" which are permanently locked all the time and play hell on the steering components etc etc.
Each to his own but I wouldn't put any of those POS in a billy cart.

Again...I have it installed in my car and have driven 6WD landrovers with THREE detroit lockers fitten one in every axle....bout the only time I ever noticed it (constant 4wd)
So how many cars have you actually driven with an auto locker fitted Oz??
1?
2?
ever?
or are you just listening to the mate of a mate of a mate at the pub who knows a guy who heard of someone driving one once??
Cmon mate this place is for educated or experienced sharing of information not hearsay!!

FFS, Matt read the guys post before you start slanging off at others !!!
He's talking about fitting a Lockrite and the "Lokka" is also a copy of the lockrite etc not a Detroit locker, which is an entirely different animal.
They are both cheap versions of a Detroit locker.
So here ya go, read what your fellow board members say about these and steering etc etc. Are you going to say they are also wrong or perhaps admit you goofed !!!!
Site Link
I originally had a Detroit trutrac LSD in the front of
mine but as soon as ARB made the air locker I swapped. Its a much better unit for a front diff of an IFS.
I also prefer my rear LSD/Locker than an ARB as the ARB is an open centre when not locked and I need an LSD for normal use.

No slagging here...remember my suggestion was constructive..the slagging was you both times, I just called for educated and sensible responses to peoples question not drivel. So I guess your answer to "HAVE YOU DRIVEN A LOKKA IS NO!!"
I still stand by my response as to scare mongers and uneducated posts.
Im glad you like your locker but dont lower yourself to senseless bagging of people who choose something different to you!!
I have not GOOFED hahah how how sad of you to think I care what you think of me!hahahahhahahahahah but someone less experience might actually take what you say as gospel and hence......contine with your retorts about something you know little of.
So enjoy you purchase and I wish you all the luck in the world but I will not entertain your little "fishing" games by responding to your posts any longer.

Matt Mu
I have driven dozens and dozens of vehicles over the years with diff locks, and from experience i would not recommend a lockrite to anyone they do not operate correctly.
We recently took one out of the front of a patrol and fitted a TJM pro locker as the customer was sick of getting sore arms evrytime he went 4wdriving.

HUH, mate, its pretty obvious for all to see whose doing the bagging and now posting drivel and that last post sums it up. You haven't got a clue what it's been about.

I have a nissan patrol and it had auto hubs on it with a lock rite and i had lots of trouble with it locking when i was driving around town so i put free wheeling hubs on it and know i have no trouble at all.

I overcome this problem by selecting 2H mode. :-)
Seriously I can't see how you have this problem. unless your autohub thingy was faulty.
Autohubs are great if your lazy like me but it's also great to select 4L for steep uphill climbs on bitumen if you leave front hubs free wheeling.

Two things to be careful of,
If it has IFS, it is very weak, and may break the diff or the axels.....i did that!!
And yes you will need freewheeling hubs, that button inside only engages the front prop shaft, the diff will still be turning, ie turning the lokka, and may lock when on the road......bad.......axels break!!!! PUT ONE IN THE BACK, THAT WILL DO. IT WILL GO ANYWHERE

Bought my self a new V6 4Runner in 1996. Got sick of the lack of travel from the IFS and installed a Detroit in the rear as the LSD was as good as useless. Nissan make the best LSD for any 4x4 and they last ! Later when funds were plentiful I had an EZI - Locker installed in the front and have never had a moments problem with turn under load or any other type of problem. In fact don't even know that there is a Detroit in the rear. Only time the Ezi Locker really pays for itself is on muddy tracks where there is the real risk of getting cross axled. Also like the idea of the Ezi Locker to pull me through and be able to turn with out mucking around with switches on again - off again- on again. I need to be able to concentrate on wheel placement rather than buggering around with switches. Cost to have installed was $1075 $750 for the Ezi Locker and $300 labour Ezi Locker recommended for all IFS set ups. ARB have to many parts to go wrong ! Paris to Daka rally all use Detroit Lockers as do the SHell V8s and Formula 1 plus all the professional rally cars use Detroit. But every one is entitled to their own opinions, and I`ve given you
mine from experience for what its worth. cheers

I would be interested once you have your lokka fitted and working to add another post later on and give is some feed back as to how
well its working when you are off 4 wheel driving in typical off road no road conditions.
Cheers
