Good to hear. There always seems to be someone bagging the Nissans. They seem like the pick of the Patrol line up these days. On a recent trip through western Queensland we noticed that the ST3.0 was by far the most popular touring rig in the outback. They were also the most extensively used by Gov't departments too. As they are the last of the live axle (re heavy duty) 4x4s, but with an economical engine, I guess they have this market sewn up.
If they only made a dual cab I'd consider trading the old Hilux.

Good to hear Balls.
But c'mon mate, tell us more. Where have you been with it? Have most of the
miles been racked up commuting to work? How do you drive it - hard? Do you tow? Who
services it? What oil do you use - how often change it - overfill it like some recommend? ......................................
Regards KD

Hi Balls
I have had my patrol since Feb 03 although a late 02 model. I have almost 175,000 up and the vehicle is still regularly returning 11.3 lit per 100kms. Motor is going
well as is the rest of the vehicle. I have it serviced to schedule and have completed trips all over Victorian high country, NSW south coast including Deua (regularly), through the SA Flinders and along the sand areas on the NSW central coast. I have not changed anything except
suspension and tyres from factory specs. Think its a great vehicle that is frugal to run. May look at a new 3.0 next year, if the financial planets align.

To JD PATROL,
I have use it from
Brisbane to
Townsville mostly and regularly, and inspections at mines at central Queensland, had
suspension replaced earlier(small lift) with 146 litre ADR complied main
tank and 4 point internal padded roll cage (mandatory at most mines)
What is the overfill thing????????????????
Hate to say it but no factory
services here? just Ultra tune (true)
Drives and looks like an average 100,000 km vehicle.
But was wondering what is the life span for these engines, we often here of Toyota high mileage (that's because they have used the same engine for 10 years)
cheers.

I have a 2003, 3.0 ST manual with 115 000klm on it. It Has towed my
Kimberley Kamper through the gulf, The Territory and been to The Cape. It is serviced at 10 000klm by Nissan dealer and has never had anything done under warranty. I fitted new coils to it when new and recently air bags. It has a steel b/bar, winch, dual batts,
HF radio, cargo barrier, roof rack with 2 solar panels and an inverter. I have done 75 000klm on the BF Goodrich tyres now with out a wheel alignment or rotation. I drive in a combination of country bitumen and dirt roads and rarely set the cruise control at more than 105 klm / hour. There is a few things on it that I would change, but generally it suits my needs. I am however awaiting the arrival of a new 6 cycl deisel eagerly. The company I work for uses Toyota's exclusively and there are some common, quite serious problems with them, so don't think that because it is a Toyota, it is immune to problems.

I was talking to a gentleman from Telstra about the 4.2 Nissan they use. I got some interesting information. They were using landcruisers and had nothing but problems. Two representatives of Toyota came to the NT and they were taken on a trip to show them where the Telstra employees took the vehicles. They stated that the Toyota was not built to do that work. Hence the change by Telstra in NT to the 4.2TD Nissan. No problems. Only modification is changing
suspension to Old Man Emu.

Hi Balls, Wife and I have a 2001 GUII 3.0 (July Build) 212, 000 K's still going strong.
Agree with AMack, a lot of people seem to be uneccessarily bagging the early 3.0 engine, but I believe they are not too bad. There are some issues that can be explained as per Chaz's Postings here and on the Patrol 4x4
Forum (Have learnt a heap from you Chaz, Whitey as
well as many many others, very good technical postings which are greatly appreciated and very helpful to us new Patrol Converts!)
We bought ours at 190,000K's, from a Supervisor, who drove it rather extensively on Highway and Dirt roads, was a logging contractor, but kept the servicing up to it. Only modification he had made was to put on some EFS
suspension for the dirt road work.
Going through the records, no major work was done to the vehicle, however we had the wonderful Dual Mass Flywheel give up the ghost at 210,000K's while on tour in Tassie, might add do NOT get repairs done there if you can help it!!!, -Long story to tell here, maybe another time!!
Put the single mass flywheel replacment back in though!!
At 211,000 K's Radiator replaced, apart from this and other issues related to the Tassie Repair issue, the vehicle has been good.
Economy seems to be consistently around 11L/100K's.
Does anyone out there reccommend a particular Brand (Good Quality) of Gauge for EGT and Boost??
Cheers
Mitch.

Before Patrol, i had a 1998 Toyota 100 series GXL petrol auto, buy the time it reached 180,000 kms (still
services regualy) the engine was smelly of oil all the time, puffs of smoke, oil top ups required between
services and big end rattles at startup, let alone the 18 to 20 litres per 100 kms, so sold it.
Before that i had a 100 series Sd 4.2 diesel prior to the GXL but sold it at about 290,000 kms (for the GXL? big mistake)

We had one out front of work the other day with about 300,000 on the clock. I don't know what year but it had the red tail lights. He was towing a small poptop.
Mine is a 2003 series three auto and so far the only thing that has failed is the glove box paint has come off. I had it replaced under warranty.
I get about 11L/100 on the highway and about 15L/100 towing a tanden van. Only a few K's on the clock, about 45,000 so far.

I never get 11's. Best is around 12.5 but that may be due to the 285x75 bfg muddies.
