looking to replace the oem dunlops on my prado 120 diesel with cooper discoverer. Already decided on coopers , so please no bfg v. cooper v. bstone v. etc, etc. comparisons. would appreciate comments from prado 120 drivers who have tried either of the coopers mentioned.
do a fair bit of
trails and sand so better traction is the main objective. would like to get the s/t but read in some posts that s/t is noisier than atr.
considering the relatively good noise dampening of the prado, does the (supposed) noise of s/t get inside the cabin.
also looking at upsizing to lt265/70r17 (10-ply). anything to watch out for i.e. speedo errors, etc?
I'm quite sure the points above has been discussed before, but brief search proved unsuccessful, both in this
forum and in the yahoo group.
thanks in advance.

Yep, I have the coopers ATR in LT265/70R17 for my Prado TD and can say they are very good and exceptionally quiet for highway work and not bad for moderate offroad. Good in sand.
I also have Goodyear MTR (maximum traction / reinforced) in same size for offroad on a 2nd set of ROH RTX alloys and they are seriously good off the tarmac but quite noisy on it.
You probably won't go wrong with the ATR. The speedo will read a touch low with this size. 100km/h indicated is actually around 105 real speed.
I have posted on here numerous times about this subject and I am surprised a search did not yield results for you.
Cheers
Muddy

In terms of speedo error, it depends how acurate your speed is now. I fitted larger tyres (7% larger rolling diameter) to my Hilux. Checked the speedo against a GPS on several occasions and found the speedo to be just about spot on AFTER the tyre change.
Try this link to calculate the theoretical speedo change.

Hi Froilan
It was me that raised the question at Post 39627. I appreciate that your looking for feedback from Prado owners - and I have a Patrol....but
I chose ATRS in the end - had them fitted last week. Seem fine so far.
A mate just bought a new Prado - and put ATRs on them also. He did a fair bit of research also before deciding.
S/Ts may look sexier - but it really comes down to a realistic assessment of what type of driving you are going to do (not dream of doing). For me that is mostly road/sand with a bit of rougher stuff thrown in. Major factor for me was also to access the light truck construction.
I went from 265/70/R16 to 265/75/R16 - and actually find that the speedo is more accurate now than it was before.
Anyway - very happy so far with the choice. On the road for 6 months - starting in 3 weeks - so that will be the real test.
Cheers,
Alan

Froilan !
I got Cooper ATR's, and apart from the " tramlining " effect, they are a good tyre.
( they follow the camber of the road )
I have been up
the Desert twice now, once through the Simpson, and once over the top, via the Plenty, and Innaminka , on the same tyres, they have got heaps of meat left on them @ approx 70,000 km. The " gibber " chipped them a little, but otherwist they are fine.
One trick I use is to start rotating them every 5,000 km, criss cross them at 5,000 km, and go front to back every 10,000
I have never had a flat tyre ( yet )
Cheers
Bucky

Hi Froilan,
I have a 100 series cruiser, and went from standard 275/70/16 to LT265/75/16 in Cooper ATR. Find them very good allround - quiet on road, good on
trails, sand etc. Mates have same vehicle as
mine and replaced their tyres with Cooper ST and ST/C respectively. Good to have the extra traction off road, but having travelled in their trucks, the extra noise is very noticeable. I they think that the tyres are also wearing quicker than
mine.
Also, as mentioned above, my speedo is now pretty
well spot on (rather than the usual car manufacturers reading that reads a bit high on standard rubber).
From what I can read, I think you'll be happy with the ATR's on your 120 series.

Being a previous owner of Cooper AT I now have Goodyear Wrangler ATR Light Truck I can't agree with the faultless performance of the brand.
Since fitting the Goodyears I no longer have the constant tracking and off centre steering problem I had with the Coopers, despite numerous alignments. As soon as the alignment was returned to factory settings by Toyota, after a failed attempt by Cooper to "fix" the tracking by over adjusting the left side, all has been good.
I have never had more punctures than with the Coopers, maybe it is bad luck, but seems ironic. I only had one of the five that had not been punctured.
I too was an avid fan of the brand, but since moving to another tyre Coopers are not up to scatch.

Speaking from personal experience, if you go for the ATR I would recommend the LT version. I had the passenger version and they performed very poorly. Lost chunks of rubber off the outside lugs, punctured one tyre on the right rear and shredded another beyond recognition on the left rear. One good think, Coopers gave me a partial refund on the two damaged tyres.

Mate I went from the old AT’s to the ST’s both LT tyres and the ST’s do everything better, Even Sand IMO which was too my surprise, except for On Road and Wet On-Road conditions, but that is too be expected.
Oh and yes I have Chipping on the outside lugs, but I am not concerned about it and I am not the least bit angry about it, and yes I would buy them agene.
Cheers.

They are very good, very quiet, so far on my Hilux 40,000km's and still look like new. A little slippery in the wet off the mark, but suspect the D4D Diesel and a little too much pedal is the culprit. I have the 265/70/17's and my speedo was re-calibrated by Toyota dealer (little box under the glove box).

I have a 100 series, decked out with a lot of weight in the back and travel on all sorts or roads (tar, gravel, harsh gravel, and also blacksoil). I am currently running Cooper ATR LT265/75/16. Have done 72,000km and only rotated them once, due to constant work constraints, i do however check pressures very regularly and also vary the pressures depending on the conditions. Tyres ,in my opinion, have at least another 40,000km in them,we'll see, do have chips out of the rear ones now due to bad gravel roads and constant very dry conditions. I am very happy with the way they handle, noise, etc. Possibly consider STT's next time in 235/85R16, just because of the harsh gravel i tend to travel on, still undecided. Definately go a narrower tread next time though. Have only had one puncture and that definately wasn't the tyres fault ( large metal spike not seen by yours truly!!), i hate punctures. That's my two bobs worth, hope it is of value to you!.Keep it real. Regards Kirsten
