I am thinking about buying a Magellan Explorist XL Gps.
It looks like some software that works on Magellan Merridian Gps units are not compatible to this unit. I already have Discover Aus Streets and Tracks (will this work). I am interested in getting some marine charts (mainly Vic and S.A) where is a good place buy these marine charts at a reasonable price ?
I already have a Magellan Merridian unit, and from what I understand you cannot get marine maps that can be loaded onto both units ?

Discover Aus Streets and Tracks works fine you just need to enter the serial number of the Explorist and the software will know to do the appropaiate conversion. There is a newer version of the marine maps avaiable I don't think the old ones are compatable.

We've had our XL for about six months I guess. We got the travel pack which includes car charger, usb cable, SD card with Aus streets and Tracks and a car mount (suction cup type)

As far as I know all the maps from previous Magellan models will NOT work as Magellan have changed their base software with the XL. If using Oziexplorer you will need version 3.95.4m or later to connect to the XL.

Great unit, easy to view screen and maps are pretty good. Menu system takes a little getting use to. Seems to be bullet proof as I've dropped ours twice and got it wet and no problems.( Rubber body)

My only real complaint is lack of external antenna (though one may be available by now) and not being able to charge batteries in the unit (I find the water proof body a Bastard to open) Also you need to buy batteries and charger as you don't get one with the XL (4x AA)

I don't have an XL myself but the normal Explorist works fine, maybe you should ask on the GPS Australia forum and doublecheck
