Probably simple to lots of people, but to install a car type am/fm radio/cd player in a caravan, is it as straightforward as connecting the unit to the van's 12v power; connecting a pair of speakers and connecting the aerial? Or am I missing something. I was intending to build a shelf to take the unit including speakers and substituting it for the inadequate 240v am/fm radio fitted to the van from new.
I'm happy to be told I am an idiat for not knowing. Thanks.

Nobody is an idiot on this site until they prove it.
Good luck with the installation.

Sounds like you have it sorted already. Be sure to include a fuse in the power supply line & earth the unit as
well..good luck with it...oldbaz.

No, barry, I haven't had a reply yet except to tell me that I need to prove I'm an idiot before anyone believes me. Perhaps because I spelt the word idiat instead of idiot gives me a start.

Yep It's as simple as you say...I actually went for a car radio, cd & dvd player combo. I also used an automatic power aerial that I put inside a space that was available, this saves having to actually put up the aerial and also lets me forget about having to put it down. I was also able to rout the speaker cabling through cupboards & secured the speakers to the underside to make the installation look professional. I bought a 3 outlet RCA block for the video leads so that I just plug them into the TV for video. It took me a day or so to do the job but most of the time spent was working out the fine detail. The most important thing is to make sure everything is secure.
I was lucky I had a void over the stove to cut out to mount the box in etc. If you give me your email I can send you some pics.

All car aerials leak
water - particularly the power ones. If it is mounted within the body of the van provide it with a drain to the outside.

Yep, It's no harder than installing one in your car, if anything it may be easier. (no computers to stuff up) 8 )>
I just replaced the old cassette tape player in the camper with a MP3/CD/radio unit, the only difference that I found was that I had to install a switch to mimic an accessories power line from the ignition switch, as
well as a power supply from the battery.
For an aerial I used an old CB coax lead with a screw on aerial.
Made sure that everything is nice and tight, so hopefully it won't rattle itself to death.

Billv,
These units need 2 types of power, 1 is permanent on to keep station memory/preferences alive, 2 is the on/off usually wired to Acc in the car. In my van they did not include 1 above (or hooked them both together) so each time I switch off the van for travel or storage the stupid radio forgets everything. I plan to hook up a permanent on wire soon. This will result in a small battery drain so this too will need an on/off switch to stop this drain during long term storage.
Mike.

You are probably better off installing a large switch in the load line near the battery. This will take care of all phantom loads - however make sure it does not prevent any charging devices you use to charge the battery when it is in storage
