The old motor in my patrol is just about dead and i am wondering if any one has fitted a hemi valiant motor to a gq.Just looking at the jeep engine i would say it is the same Plymouth type motor as a valiant hemi.I ask this question as i have a perfect 245 heavy block truck engine just gathering dust in the shed.I fitted a 265 to a G60 about 20 years ago and it performed beautifully.castlemaine rod shop does not seem to carry any adaptors along this line, they have always been less than helpful inthe past so this time i will save myself the cost of a phone call. The only thing that will stop me fitting this motor is the oil pump location, whether or not i can rwork the pickup and the sump to clear or replace with a jeep sump and pickup, any advice would be appreciated. steve

Galfeysteve.

Unfortunately you will not get approval from your dept of transport due to the age of the engine. Legally the engine must meet the emmision standards that apply to the year of manufacture of the vehicle and usually a replacement eng must be the same age or newer. There are exceptions where the engine is run on LPG solely. An approved engineer will be able to clarify this though.

Marks Adaptors would have a kit I am sure. I dont have their No but their are in Vic. Also Falcon engines work well and you could get one of the same age. They are torquey engines with good ecomony

Thanks Pete,
I have a crossflow 4.1 sitting here and that is what i wanted to use originally but i suspect that the position of the oil pump wont allow clearance on the diff or drag link.If i put a lift kit in it it may clear.I tried marks but could not find a listing for the hemi or the ford motor. These motors go into a G60 with no problem but maybe not a GQ.I will investigate jeep engines a little further as jeep may have been using this block into the 90 s. steve

Is the Patrol motor that bad it can't be rebuilt? Repco do an exchange long motor for approx $4,000 - might be cheaper in the long run.

Possibly the replacement motor might need a rebuild too, then there’s engine mounts to modify, radiator differences, engine electricals, exhaust to change, insurance could be rejected as it's not original but most of all is it allowed to be done in your state - but I guess you know all that.

As for the sump – just slice it in half depth wise and spin the top half with the bottom half, weld it back together then modify the oil pick-up pipe to suit.

But what's the main gain over the Patrol motor - more power, performance or reliability? Your call I guess.

Hi Banjodog, Its just an uncotrollable urge i have to tinker with things. The hemi motor i have is like new and i will do all machining and fabrication my self so i hope to save a few bob in the end.Much cheaper to repair down the track and should pull pretty good, much the same fuel consumption, i think and i can still buy a dizzy cap at kmart for $25. It is already running an XF falcon radiator which you can buy new old stock on ebay for less than $150. Steve

I was sure castlemain rod shop did one chrysler to nissan?
Should be a ball tearing convertion. I would love to replace my 60 series Toyota 3f with a 265 hemi (i even believe it would get better fuel consumption lol) but its only done 10,000 klm on this motor so i will wait a while yet.
I am not a 100% sure but you may get away with the sump off a standard vehicle Eg. cl,vj. I am sure there is a differance in the HD eng sump (as fitted to the dodge trucks) .
Its amaizing what you can do with a plasma cutter & a tig nothing is impossible;)
Have fun & keep us all up to date with the project sounds like a ripper!
