by "via proserpine", what do you mean???

Proserpine is on the main highway north, with no simple way to deviate towards the gulf from there :-)

Several options exist, depending on your preferences.....i would head north to Bowen, head west to just before Collinsville, head towards Burdekin Dam, onto Charters Towers, then either Gregory Development Road or out to Hughenden and Porcupine Gorge and then follow the signs north :-) Not the fastest way north, just a nice tour with some good camping areas eg. 30km (?) north of Charters Towers on Fletcher Creek, etc.

sorry, just reread your posting.....you meant that you have to go via Proserpine (relatives, etc)?

Never been all the way to Karumba....just to Georgetown. :-(

Anywhere west of the coastline will be warm this time of year...therefore travelling in the cooler periods are always better. Read the info on this website, especially under "trip planning" and "on the road".

the whole trip is now bitumen and the longest distance between fuel is 150ks just watch the weather for flooding of rivers other wise a very easy trip Col

It'll be HOT and HUMID and the mosquitoes will be there in force. Shouldn't be too much of a problem with rain as the main wet season usually only starts around mid January.

Proserpine, Townsville, The Lynd, Georgetown, Normanton, Karumba and return via Cloncurry and Longreach to Rocky and Gladstone

We drove Cairns to Normanton to Mt Isa and Darwin a couple of times in January and before the roads were all bitumen(and before airconditoned vehicles!!!!!). T'was fun then(1970's and 80's) but not so keen on doing in now...lol

Enjoy and a good Xmas to you too.
