Just saw on the latest reports that Craig's Hut has become the latest fire victim.

I guess we should count ourselves lucky its not a historically significant high country hut and only a movie prop.

It was not originally built with public funds, So I wonder if it will be replaced at taxpayers expense???

adn just think, McDonalds plans for a store will all be up in smoke.

Keen an eye on the Victorian Huts Association Site for a list of probably 100+ that will have been lost.. this one was only a movie set.

Its the historical ones that really are the sad loss.

I saw it on the news earlier. I know it's a movie set but it's a shame regardless.

lots of open ground around it no trees up close what set it on fire airborne embers was any attempt possible to save it,or was it left to burn. i dont take anything away from firemen just curious.

The bloke with the helicopter charter business in Mansfield was the first to advise it's demise. He flew up with some help and some tools to go and take the shingle roofing off to try and reduce it's vulnerability (with DSE command centre approval apparently) and they didn't even land, they were too late.

It's location was part of it's problem.

Most of the cattlemen built their huts in protected locations - saddles, hollows etc. They are often in green pockets even when all around them is dry. Doesn't mean they don't get burnt but it's amazing how many have survived as long as they have through other fires.

This one was built to look spectacular for a movie but it's location was unprotected from the elements including fire.

It's only value was in tourism. And as long as the tourists were there they weren't bugging me in the better parts of the high country.

With the number of blokes here that are handy with a saw and also enjoy camping, we should get a list of names and forward it to the Vic high country huts association and offer to help re-construct a few of the huts that have been lost.

Face it, they were cheap to build, but labour intensive, so a few more bodies to scout around for old windows and corrugated iron and someone to help haul it up there can’t go astray. I saw on Land line that they rebuilt Horse Hair hut in a long weekend once they got the right approvals and enough bodies on deck.

The approval process is a nightmare though. Look at what they had to go through to try and get approval to replace Lovicks Hut.
