Hi All,
Since we will no longer be able to see Craigs Hut with our own eyes anymore and for those who have not been there, it would be nice to see as many pics of the hut as possible.
I was unfortuanete to see the hut in the wrong light and had planned many trips there since but all fell through.
Anyway here is a link to virtual tour I did on my only trip there..... I so wish I had been there in the right light. I have seen some magic pics of the Hut. I too will try and find the stills I do have and post them.
Site Link I hope you will be able to view it.
Come on people let us see
Craig's Hut in all its glory.
Looking forward to seeing your pics
Peter

Nice one, I like that too... Seems to be one of those
places where it's kinda difficult to take a really bad shot...

How many of the other huts have been burnt does anyone know? I was born in Sale and spent many a weekend in and around the
Dargo High Plains. It is a sad time for the mountains although, with some luck they might be able to recover from this glimpse of Mother Nature's fury.
Cheers

I have obviously been living under a rock for the last few days and can only assume from the "tone" of this post that Craigs Hut (or the movie set) has been burnt down in the bushfires over the last week or so.
Is this correct.

We were there with Des Lexic and John R(Vic) & Moses only a few weeks ago: smoke haze from other fires in eastern SA and western Victoria shaded the background to this photo. Hope this picture posts. No doubt many other old huts have gone too.
We were fortunate to enjoy it all so much......RayJen

Hi Pete,
It was probably even colder that day than the photo indicates.
Not sure if you know the area or not, but I actually drove up Monument Track to get to the top that day.
I find that track is quite easy when covered in snow - everyone seems to avoid it when it's like that - all the usual rocky areas get flattened by the snow and it becomes a relatively gentle drive.

I have only been up there once in January this year, and we drove in from the north from
the loop road. We have a 8x10" blow up of a hut photo on the wall at home. It took some time to get the shot without people there because it was packed that day. 43ºC in the shade so it was just a little warmer than your visit.
We camped that night at Pineapple flat.
Cheers
Pete

I am very sad to hear about the burning of Craigs Hut.
My 4wd Club, and myself personally, have a long association with the Hut, and I am really upset about it having gone now.
Even if it does get rebuilt, it wont be the same, because some of the timber that was used to build it originally and even during the rebuild in 1993 was over 100 years old.
I have SOOOO many photos of the hut from over the years, its so hard to choose the best one......

That looks wierd the way it took the hut and left half the surrounding vegetation. I'm wondering if embers set the fake bark roof alight and it took off from there. Fire acts in strage ways.

Pete,
That is exactly what happened.
There were several concerned people who were worried about the bark on the roof, which was put in place to hide the corrogated iron roof. Its not actually fake bark it is real bark, from real trees that was put there when the restoration happened. We were waiting to be able to get more bark from the trees to do the rest of the roof, which is why alot of photos of the back of the hut have only half the roof covered.
The embers actually got into the bark and set the roof alight which then took out the rest of the hut.
A friend and supporter of Craigs Hut got permission to take a chopper up there, to try and get there before the fire to get the bark off the roof, hoping that might help delay the fires, but unfortunately he was too late as the hut had already burnt down. Alll the footage we have seen so far of the hut burnt down is from his flight up there, as he took someone with him to film it.
Fingers crossed that the council does as they say they are going to do and get behind the re-build - they have never really supported the hut financially in the past - but there is always hope.

I have to work on my written communication skills. By "fake bark roof" I meant that the bark roof was not doing the job of keeping water out - that was what the iron was doing.
Perhaps "dummy roof made from real bark" would be better.
Still it is sad that it is gone. Even if it was only a movie set, it was still park of recent Australian history. A lot of people (us included) have visited it because of it's association with the movies.
Cheers
Pete

I feel that the real huts should take priority over Craigs, but know most orginisations money will be the deciding factor.
Huts like Tomahawk and binderee are more important.
