Just returned from 5 sensational days at Thurra
camp. did many walks and were able to swim most days and caught a couple of nice flathead in the gutters out the front of the
camp site - on prawns and whitebait. Saw 2 tiger snakes (pretty normal this time of year) and a couple of big goanna's. The advantage of going this time of year is not only the weather but there would have been only 4-5 campsites occupied most nights. (out of 45). Were not able to have fires 2 of the days and were very careful (as always ) with the other nights. For those who know the area the Mueller campsites are under
water ( i guess the
creek outlet must be blocked), and I don't think they'll be available any time soon. The Cicada trail is blocked off.
This is a beautiful spot to
camp, as long as you go outside school holidays. The track (road) is in good nick, but the road down to Wingan is a bit chopped up. Could still do it in 2WD carefully, though.
Drove through very thick smoke from
Lakes Entrance to just near Sale yesterday. Feel so sorry for those folk stuck in that - vis. was down to 100 metres in patches.
There was no or little smoke north of Cann River.

Hi Craig,
Thanks for the info we are heading up that way early next week for a few days.
1. Is the Thurra
camping area suitable for camper trailers?
2. Did you need to prebook the
campsite?
regards simon.

G'day Simon.
No worries. In answer to your questions -
1. Yes. We tow a Sthn Cross offroad and had no trouble getting into site number 30. Most sites are fairly small but you'll find a number that you'll get into easily. The ones along the
creek immediately to the right after you cross the bridge would be the biggest but the mossies are a bit troublesome there. Site 30 is about half way down towards the lighthouse on the lh side, and only about 30 metres from
the beach.
2. Not at the moment. Would think you won't need to worry about booking until after Xmas. The
Ranger guy there said it is wall to wall people from Boxing day until the end of Jan.
Regards,
Craig.

Good to hear about the Thurra. I grew up around the Thuraa, Mueller, Wingan etc. My Dad was the
Ranger in Charge for the National Parks back in the 80's. It was great back then, summers spent eating mussels and oysters from the rocks, running around the
sand dunes, going to the lighthouse etc. Great times.

Timal -
What a childhood! Lucky person. While I curse at times the restricted access put on us in National Parks, at least it preserves beautiful
places for the future.
Craig.
