I recently read a post regarding adjusting the handbrake on a 90 series Prado, and was wondering if the procedure was the same for a V6 120 series, as my handbrake now pulls up about 10-12 clicks. The car has only done 22000kms , and I haven't taken it in for the 20000 service as i've done most of it myself.
I also notice with the car that there is a noticable ticking noise, similar to an exhaust leak or a rattly tappet in the motor, but when I took it to the local Toyota dealer to have a look at, they described the noise exactly and stated that it was due to the extractors making the noise and that it was a common complaint amongst owners. Is this correct? The car runs faultlessly, but it's damm annoying, especially when drivng with the windows down and up against a concrete barrier or
rock face roadway when it's more noticable.

Dobbo60,
With only 22000km it is unlikely you have any wear with the park brake pads (drum in disc style as mentioned by others.) unless you've driven with the park brake on that's is! These pads in most cases last the life of the car (ie our VS commodore's are as new with 2250000 k's on it.
Prado cables stretch a bit from new (ours adjusted twice in first 15000 km)
Adjustment is in cabin (not under vehicle) you need to remove console trim around hand brake lever and you will see the adjustment rod and nut at the base of the hand brake lever assembly. 6-8 clicks is the specified adjustment.
If you run into trouble I can email you the relevant PDF from the service manual.

Mick, just went out and had a look now, but unless you're a gynocologist with a keen eye, I can't see how to get to it. I suspect that the cable has stretched a little since new . Could you email me the details from the service manual?
My email address is pdavey@unwired.com.au.
cheers,

Dobbo,
Make sure you always adjust the pads at the rear wheels first, before adjusting cable length at the lever. And make sure you don't confuse the "clicks" - you back off 3-4 clicks at each wheel; but like Mick says, its 6-7 clicks at the lever when you pull it on.
After 20k, I think you'll find a pad adjustment at the rear wheels will have it fixed. I used to find that 20k adjustments where necessary to keep the Prado handbrakes working
well.
