As you can gather , I am a computer cretin .

I purchased OziExplorer and I am not sure if it has a map of all of Australia in it or no maps at all .

Do I need to now buy maps from somewhere and load them into it or what ?

I would like to have topo maps and satellite maps in it . Can anybody recommend good ones and tell me if they are available from the EO shop .

Thanks ,

Willie .

Afternoon Willie
You will have to spend more $. They are in the ExploreOz shop. New South Wales id badly served for topo Maps, But you can Scan your own.
Let me know if you are going to do that as I have quite a few scanned already

Depending on the speed of your connection and how many maps you want, free maps at 1:250k are available on the natmap web site. Similarly sat photo maps can be downloaded free.

I believe bgreeni meant Geoscience Australia.....direct link to free downloads here ==> www.ga.gov.au/products/ which will take you to their various products.

Abridged instructions (may missed some steps):

- tick the "topography" checkbox
- define an area of interest
- follow instructions (i usually draw an area on a webmap)
- select the appropriate map (the 1:250000 topos will look like this ==> SG55-01)
- check the download box
- continue to file selection
- select "ER Mapper Enhanced Compressed Wavelet (ECW)," as map type
- continue to registration (free and spam free :-))
- register
- receive email
- download map sets

Remember you can select larger areas and download more files with the one email link instead of going through the process for every map.

Make sure Oziexplorer is set up for ECW file support (download the .dll file from the Oziexplorer optional extra webpage here ===> Site Link )

Hope that helps.

G'day Andrew
Thanks for detailed instructions. Now this may be a really dumb question but... can those free maps be downloaded and then just printed off? Or are they just for use with software?
Thanks from the Moose

They are a georeferenced digital image in ECW file format......you can either load them into Oziexplorer or grab a free ECW viewer eg:

Irfanview - free great viewer software.....need a free plugin from the website IIRC

ER viewer - free software....can't remember if it prints (been a while since i have used it).

Hope this helps

There are a few basic maps available from the Ozi Explorer site:

www.oziexplorer.com/ and click on the Maps link.

I use the Natmap rasters which are 1:250,000 (about 1cm to the km displayed on my laptop.) They are a good basic ste and have not ley us down yet.

I also have the UBD city streets (Must be Version 3) which has street directories of all the Aus capital cities, Wollongong and the central coast.

The NATMAP rasters are for sale on this site together with lots of other maps in David's Shop

Cheers

Ozi Explorer to me is just like windows XP... You install it as a tool to open and view maps from other programs... Also it has the option for sat nav and all that crap...
I have limited knowledge..
I use NatRaster maps in mine and it works well..

Willie,

To get the Natmap to work youneed to down load the .mpa files from OziExplorer.

The link to these and other useful files and instructions on how to use them is here.

Have fun, Ozi is a great tool when it is up and running.

Cheers

Can I suggest a couple of ideas.

1. Try and find someone who can sit down with you for half a day and help you set up OziExp and your maps - it is a complex program that contains lots of features but you need to know how to use them. I have been a user for many years and still find new things, or new ways to do old things.

2. Join the Yahoo groups OziExp forum. Lots of very knowledgeable users there who will only be too willing to help.

Willie,

I'm at North Rocks and run Ozi on the Desktop, Laptop and PDA and have a few maps. I have been using it for a while and although not an expert can run you through the basics. PM me if you are interested.

Now Willie, you saw it working on the PDA on our little jaunt through the mountains the other day. I was using the same maps. Not an expert on Ozi by any means but I can get you started. Let me know if you're interested and we'll set up a meeting.
