I looked at a Teracan Diesel Auto today and was wondering if any body has experience of them as a tow vehicle for a caravan of 1.4 Tonne Any feed back would be appreciated.

I hope Member Greg S has seen this post. He has similar setup and found Fraser to be no probs, so power wise, I am sure if anywhere was going to test it then Fraser would have. Suspension to cope with that weight would be another issue that I would have no idea with having never owned a Terracan.

Good luck, Trevor.

1.4 tonne, it will eat it for breakfast. Very economical as well.

Check out our forum

www.terracan.australia4wd.com

At the moment you can pick up a new Jerry Can for the price of a 4 year old Prado or Pajero. With a 5 year warranty.

Mine (Petrol) is 2.5 years old and is going so well, I would never consider buying a "brand" name vehicle at a 30% premium.

G'day gordl,
As Trevor said we own a Terracan(05 CRDI, auto).

To tow a 1.4 tonne van would be easy for a terracan, especially the diesel.

We tow a Cape York Trailer/ Deluxe explorer camper trailer. Fully loaded with water and all of our gear it weighed in at 1.48T,(got it weighed at weighbridge) but before we left for Fraser Is we dumped around 100kg of gear, so it would of weighed around the 1.4T.
We had reservations about the vehicle towing the camper up to Ocean Lake (north of Waddy Point), but it did this easily. ( the only place we got stuck was trying to get behind Indian Head. Didn't let the tyres down enough.....stupid,stupid mistake on my behalf, BUT I let the tyres down and it went through without any trouble whatsoever).

The first thing I would do is upgrade the suspension as it is pretty soft and the rear end will sag a fair bit when loaded/towing etc. We've had Airbag Man airbags(firestone) installed in the rear and this makes a hell of a difference when towing as it get's the rear back up to where it should be. This makes it much safer to tow as the front end is not pointing to the sky.

As jimbo say's, go and have a look at the Terracan forum, as you will get some good info and idea's on the Jerrycan.

There are a few accessories you can get for a Terracan......Alloy bullbars/nudgebars(ECB and Custom Alloy){unfortunately you cannot buy a winch compatible bullbar in Australia).....Roof rack systems....replacement fuel tanks (OL)....rear bumper spare wheel carrier (and extra tank where spare went)....I think someone makes a rear drawer system??, or you can make your own as I and many other's have.....dual battery system (from OL, or you can buy all the bit's and install yourself.Derek from ABR will be able to help you here)....A/T tyre's from most manufacturer's.....cargo barrier.....suspension upgrade's(ARB, TJM, OL, Ironman{these guy's are the only one's to do a complete upgrade of shock's, rear coil's and front torsion bar's}....front locker's......Plus all of the other general accessories you might want, two-way's, floor mat's, seat cover's etc etc etc.......

BUT overall the Terracan is a very capable 4wd, that is given very little credit.
There are some very good second hand one's out there that haven't done many km's and are going pretty cheap, and then you can add the accessories you want and still come away with a good vehicle for less than most of the other big name brand's.......If you only want to drive on the blacktop, with a little bit of dirt thrown in then the Terracan will serve you well. But if you wanted to do some decent 4wding (low range stuff)then it is very capable of doing this as I and other's on the Terracan Forum have found out......

Hope this help's

Cheer's Greg

If you are purchasing a Teracan consider their tow pack - this increases the maximum tow ball weight from 150 kg to 250 kg. Putting on your own after market heavier suspension mods will not legally up rate the tow ball capacity (unless you can get someone to provide you with an engineering certificate.) It gives some other benefits but I forget what they are.
