Have factory dual battery in the GU, lately the charge control relay has been clicking on and off in 5 second intervals just after start up. I assume it is deliveing charge, then not, then delivering more????? I turned all the aux apliances, fridge etc off and it still does it....is this normal, or have i just not noticed it B4

I'd check the voltage on the main battery before startup, then monitor the voltage while it is doing this and see if that gives a clue.
If the voltages on the main battery side are OK before and after startup, it would point to a faulty relay.
Could be a faulty regulator in the Alternator, or maybe a contact has developed high resistance - clean and reconnect the terminals.

voltage on cranking battery fine.....it will only crank on the main, never the aux. Ausx battery is fine, runs fridge 24/7 no probs, thinking the relay must be okay, as it is switching. i will clean contacts although they shouldn't be the problem, all the electricts are covered in soft seal waterproofing.....hmmm tricky one, because everything works ok, pleanty of juice available

The charge will be passing through the relay while it is clicked on, and will stop when clicked off. As you say this is every 5 seconds, you will get 30 mins of charging per hour of running, which would be enough to keep the 2nd battery charged.
It sounds excessive for the relay to be doing this - from memory someone mentioned in another post that a Redarc is rated for about 60,000 cycles before it's EOL. There would also be a life limit on yours, and it will reach EOL far earlier than it otherwise would. If it's roughly the same as a Redarc, it will die after about 80 hours.
Sounds like no animals will be harmed by the current behaviour of the thing, though. :)

Did Nissan sell it to you as a Nissan accessory? If so, then it should be covered under the vehicle warranty.
Let 'em fix it!

there is no such thing as a genuine dual battery setup from nissan
the dealer may have had it done for you, but at an outside autoelec.
talk to the dealer and find out

What type of relay / isolator is it? This will determine if it connects when a certain voltage is attained or if it connects straight away or after a certain time.
Try connecting a known good 12v supply directly to one side and earth to other side to energise (no loads on the main contacts). If it is good then try with your batteries connected. If still good then it could be a bad earth or the 12v is taken off an accessory that shorts to ground when activated (wiper motor, light etc).
Regards
David

Does it stop clicking if you hold the revs up?
Sounds like the alternator output is low at idle.

Your a smart man PAL!! thats's exactly the problem, when its idled up there is no probs, problem is both batteries and accessories drawing from the alternator just after startup and the AUX battery is not full due to fridge, and crankin battery obviously cause its just turned the oiler over!!! had a mate who is auto get electricuted, look at, cheers people!!!!
