Hi All
Just read a recent post re -151F & 150F gearboxes in the 100 series cruisers
Can anyone tell me where the weak link is in the 151 series boxes?
I have one so I'm interested to know
Thanks Diesel

Not so much a week link. It is just that they are lighter duty gearboxs in the non Turbo models and very similar to the Prado gearbox

If you have a 100 series
you will have the R151F

Where as the 78, 79 series and factory Turbo Diesel 100 series have the H151F gear box which is more heavy duty

Not quite, any nomally aspirated diesel 78, 79 or 100 Series receives the R150F gear bag.

Factory turbo diesels and petrols receive the heavier duty H151F.

Prados with the 1kz-te engine have the R150F gearbox, as do Hiluxs and Prados with the new 1kd-ftv common rail motors.

I asked a gearbox mechanic the same question and he replied ,the synchroes ,the retainers and the bearings, basically everywhere.

I think you have to fit a bigger flywheel off a turbo to accept the larger clutch if you wanted to change gearboxes

Hi diesel...I have a 99 landcruiser with the above gearbox and at 120,000 k's thereabouts the fifth gear went....It got stuck in and would not come out.
When we pulled the gearbox apart the short shaft, which comes in two parts, that connects the gearbox to the transfer box, had a stripped spline as well, was just hanging on.( once it goes you lose all drive)
Well the fifth gear part was completely stuffed and so was the output shaft....and it was cheaper to replace the gearbox $3300 and a new beefed up output shaft, 2 pieces, $350, all with 20000 waranty and it is still going strong.

Yeah, there's no weak link. It's all built to the same standard throughout. But it's too small is the problem.

The R151F is the same box used in the Hilux and in the Supra. What do these cars weigh compared to 100 series? The compromise is probably based on engine power as the N/A's are not very powerful and might be perfectly valid if most of your use is on the bitumen but in my opinion fails miserably when we're talking about the constant load due to pushing 3+ tonnes over corrugations for days at a time...

Weak points? Input bearing, output shaft (early 7X series models), synchro rings, lack of synchro on reverse (a bit of metal comes off every time you engage it if there's any movement), no forced lubrication (no oil pump and therefore no filter screen either) means it just won't last as long... Iwas talking to a reputable 4wd suplier yesterday and he told me that there are some updated parts available through Toyota for these boxes
Didn't have time to get the full story , when I do I'll put up another post
