A fire started suspiciously this afternoon on the other side of Mt Beauty. The wind was blowing the opposite direction so there was no way it spotted from Big
Hill. If it wasn't for the quick response from the fire crews I think it could of been a different story. 3 helicopter
water bombers including Elvis arrived as
well as bulldozers, CFA strike team etc. I could see a little glow but all appears to be under control. Fires are still burning on Big
Hill which is behind Mt Beauty (the one with the tv and phone tower on top)

If these fires are deliberately lit,if & when they catch the so & so's they should nail them to a stake & set fire to them. There is no excuse for these
pests.

There's very little doubt about it. Take away the question mark.
Leroy did you see the footage on the news tonight of the two excavators with the logging arms on them which they'd left on Big
Hill.
Toast.
I can't for the life of me work out why they didn't go in with a couple of low loaders on Saturday, Sunday or even Monday and get them before they burnt.

I saw that footage. I had a brief chat to that fellow while we were looking at this fire and he said he will be on 9 news tonight. I think people thought that Big
Hill wouldn't burn again so soon after the '30 fires.
Here's a pic of Big
Hill tonight.

Maybe they think they are safe swimming around in the shallow end of the gene pool
That spot down the end of Rockpool Rd where they lit it today used to be a good spot to go
parking.
Hope it cleared out some of the blackberries but that would be the only good to come of it.

Actually a bit of trivia you may or may not know but the big
swimming hole upstream from the ford at the bottom of the fire track used to be the town pool when the hydro was being built. One of the rocks even has the footings of the diving board still on it.
CFA are trying to get trees cleared off the BHP Rd at the moment and the fires up near McKay Power Station somewhere.
I wouldn't want to be in the
fire tower on McKay if it goes up there. That is seriously steep - it'll race to the top of that one.

Hey Leroy,
"I just don't know what goes through some peoples heads."
Its obvious, Not a Bloody Thing...... Setting fire to them is to quick, just give them 2nd deg burns this week, 2 weeks later give them some 3rd degree ones, I think you get the picture...

Shaker, was thinking of you actually with that blaze, just as we were two weeks back when we were there .
Hearing about the blaze being deliberately lit makes my blood boil mate..... Hear the police are looking for the assistance of a couple of tall possibly 17 year old fellows on (trail) bikes.

With the CFA threat withdrawal from
Coopers Creek I gather things have eased up a bit?

When we were up there a few weeks ago, noticed that the blackberry bushes were starting to take over every where. just out of curiosity, will the fire destroy them or will they regenerate like all the native stuff?

Des, Unfortunately they do grow back so make the most of it. I hate them with a passion. They stop you from accessing rivers etc. when they get too think.

Des, if only mate. The buggas grow again just as strong. To think there was an explorer of the HC that spread seeds "so others may enjoy fruit".
