Hi everyone,
Im making this post as a last resort. My early 90s 80 series turbo diesel sahara has a shocking shake at low idle when in drive and reverse. The car has spent the last 2 months at a mechanics who have repaired the following in an attempt to fix the problem:
replaced engine mounts
rebuild/re-kit diesel pump
bench test and flow injectors
rebuild gearbox valve body and major gearbox service
rebuild torque convertor
The problem occures when you are in a stationary position and you select reverse/drive(auto gearbox by the way), once reverse/drive is selected its fine whilst you keep your foot on the brake and the car is stationary but as soon as you slightly take your foot of the brake so the car creeps the whole gearbox, engine etc... shakes like crazy side to side the 4wd selection stick shakes side to side really badly. The tacho dosent move the idle sits perfectly still.
Im still convinced its gearbox mounts but they keep telling me its not.
Can anyone out their help, has anyone experienced this before?
I've spent a fortune and it still has the problem.
a few car specs incase it helps:
early 90s 80 series landcruiser sahara turbo diesel automatic
Thanks everyone

Hmmm.....
Could it be that you've been barking up the wrong tree???
The fact that it's doing it when there's just enough pressure on the brakes to allow the car to creep, suggests to me a problem with the brake system..
warped discs perhaps??
Another thought, does the auto g'box have vacuum servos??
could be a vacuum leak causing the auto to do funny things.. (??)..
I have no idea really, just a coupla things ya might like to check...

I'll go with Ed on this one.....totally different vehicle but my work bike (yes I'm a postie) can be made to vibrate to different levels by adjusting brake pressure, I don't understand why, just does???? weird huh!!!!

Yep it's a bugger. Had exactly the same problem with my 80 series and like you spent a fair bit trying to work it out! After much cursing and swearing AND money, my neighbour came over and told me to check the vacuum advance on the fuel pump. Turned out to be a $48 part and ten minutes to replace. Don't know if that will help but it fixed
mine! Good luck!

Gearbox mounts maybe or a crook universal.
If we all throw more ideas on the table we will nail it soon....lol

thanks everyone.
can you tell me a bit more about the vacuum advance. easy to replace? can i test it?
Discs were skimmed about 5000kms ago and new pads fitted then also. it occures even if u apply the handbrake just enough so that it only creeps forward. im guessing if we had enough people push against the car putting it under load with no brake it would do the same thing.
another thing i forgot to add, i did a few tests, once it starts to shake when the car is creeping the second i apply the smallest amount of acceleration (even with foot still on brake letting car creep) it stops the shaking and is fine. This is what led them down the path of the fuel system but whilst its shaking the rpm dosent move or miss at all. did your 80 series do this? Any other symptoms you can tell me about?
no real vibrations to mention.
really looking forward to getting to the bottom of this, thanks again guys
cheers

Does it feel like its about to stall? or are the revs high enough and it feels like theres something loose?
Try and eliminate a problem like fuel filters and obvious things.
Hold the brake on and give it a few revs?
Not much help I know but try and find a situation were it doesnt happen.
Good luck
Cheers

I was also thinking about the idle speed.
I would try and boost it up a bit and see if there is any difference.
Maybe the rev counter doesn't register the small changes in revs too accurately at low speed.

Did you get a compression test along with all the injector and pump work? Could it be a broken piston ring???

Hi all, i would run over the valve clearances and then check the timing belt and tensoiner.

It sounds like the idle is too slow.
Turn the air con off, warm idle should be about 800 and will drop to about 600 when in gear.
The last thing to check and set is the air cons high idle unit and that it is set so that the revs do not drop when the compressor comes in.
Hope this is of use.

hi everyone,
the idle speed is all within spec.
I think they did a compression test, but i'll have to confirm. The strange thing is that the car drives and runs perfectly, no power loss, smooth, no smoke. All the mechanics that look and drive it cant understand how a car that runs this
well can have such an awful shake that only occures at low idle.
any idea's on who to take it to in
Perth?
Thanks

thanks Andrew. I'll give him a try.
I did have the torque convertor rebuilt a week ago however. maybe they missed something.
