ROADBLOCKS AND SAFETY SIGNS
We have had a number of reports of people not adhering to roadblocks and safety signs - particularly in the Ovens and Bright areas.
Roadblocks are set up when the roads become unsafe so it is very important that people adhere to them.
Signage and roadblocks are set up for the public`s safety and we are appealing to people to take notice of them.
DSE, VicRoads and Victoria Police are constantly reviewing road closures, and make it a priority to open them as soon as they are safe.
For more information on road closures, visit the VicRoads website.

I have found myself on closed roads before.
But I only found out when I passed the Road Closed sign from the wrong direction.

Both times the signs had been put up at one end of the road but no one had bothered to whack on up at the other end.

At the moment though, Up in that part of the world, I would be giving the whole area a wide berth. Too much chance of trees sheding limbs and powerlines coming down with burnt out poles.

Me too hoyks, after the Grampians fire a week later on Mafeking Road, mind you it was an area I wanted to observe the severity of the hot burn. It horrified me actually.....

The trees were risking but with low wind not too much trouble. Locals were erecting new fences and all that too.

Like most things signs are sometimes put up for the lowest common denominator
person and then sometimes not collected properly.

Don't know about you but I've come up against situations of 3 inches of water across a road which may be fine for grandma in her Datsun 1000 , but doesn't exacly challenge a full sized well equipped 4wd, with an offical saying "my boss said no one is allowed thru, and I have no common sense leeway".

No ,but the 1metre deep trench hidden under the 3inches of water will stop the fool like you that think the sign does not apply to them.

Tis not a matter of misreading your post Robin ,it is a matter that you state that a particular /specific road sign may not apply to you , ROAD CLOSED means just that ,and by law as long as that sign meets the specifications as per laid down in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control and you fail to obey such sign your insurance is null and void should you require a claim of the the same. that old son is "common sense" which is severly lacking by a very large % of the motoring public.

Robin ,,just in case YOU have not figured it out , YOU are the lowest common denominator that the sign is for , "whoa "i have the big lift " I have the "BALLS" the bloke telling me "you cant go there" what the f---" yeah the roads only closed for no effen reason ,I can do what ever I like , he is the bloke that has to rescue you or worse, drag your dead body to a safe place and then tell YOUR MUM , your little Robin is no more.

Hi Alloy

You have mis-read my post above.
It does not argue for driving past signs, it argues for there
proper use & implementation, which actually improves the compliance rate.

Its sad to see that your reply reverts name calling, which is sometimes used when one has no case.

Blind obedience to anything is why we now have a nanny state, and hence posts
like 40348.

Robin has a point - I made a post here a few months ago about two sets of roadworks about 1km apart on a freeway - identical in all practical respects - one had 60kph sign and the other a 40kph sign. Unless signage is consistent and sensible then we learn to ignore it. And I've lost count of the number of 60kph roadworks I've seen with not a sight of either roadwork or people!

So, are you now qualified to determine what is a sensible speed limit for roadworks?
There must be no end to your talents.

Shaker , it not about having a qualification ,some situations are obviously wrong, and its about applying a bit of common sense.

Oh! You bitch, you!

What? You mean you are unable to do that yourself!? _Any_ qualified driver should be able to work that out otherwise he should not be driving; or are you one of those people who always needs an instruction of some kind to tell them how top behave in a sensible manner?

No matter how clever you think you may be ... the fine is still the same.

I don't agree with 40kmh in school zones ... but I do it!

Mike you say that the signs were indentical yet obviously they were not , the law/ rule book for signage at roadwork's is very specific as to speed advisory signs , 60k is for a work performed a specific metre distance from the closest traffic ,40k closer to the traffic , ect ect ,the biggest problem is of course that the motorist in general have no idea what is actualy happening at the roadworks , cant see anybody so must be ok to do whatever they want ,bang !! 6 traffic control personel killed at work since AUG 13 2005.

Why does it Pezza?? ....

Although I said that I don't agree with it .... I comply with it, which is more than the others here that don't agree with safety limits & ignore them.
We went for 100 years driving cars with no 40kmh school zones.

WHY NOT EDUCATE THE CHILDREN???? Are we saying that children can't be educated & made to comply either?

Where I live, because the traffic is only doing 40kmh they no longer bother with the school crossings, they just pick their way through the traffic, because they think can judge the traffic easier at the slower speeds, & that's safer??

Mike, once again it has been interesting 'crossing swords' with you.

Have a Merry Christmas & a Happy & Safe New Year.

I hope we get to meet one day, preferably over a cold drink in the High Country.

Oh... more like a gentle caressing of daggers, really :)

Sounds good to me!

>PS: It's quite fun being the "devil's advocate"

I never take debates on the net to heart - it's an unreal environment and we only get to see one very focused aspect of an individual. I know, full well, I don't agree with many of my friends on very many aspects of life... but we still manage to maintain a relationship even though we may, sometimes, bicker about specifics. Indeed my current lady has some _very_ different outlooks (Greenie!) to me but, given time, I'll try to educate her :)

So you and yours have a good Xmas and NY too Shaker and I'll hold you to that beer :)

Well I reckon the 40kmh speed limits should be 24hrs a day at schools

I also think that roadwork signs with no sign of roadworkers are a PITA and encourage ppl to break the limit

I am also a bad bastard and drive like an old fart

I also like goats and cows

I also wish you all a Happy Christmas and a prosperous new year

Goats are fine. However I was not, previously, aware of this penchant for cows, Bonz!? Nor was "our friend"!

As much as Mildred and I (she says "Hi" btw - well... "Bleeetttt" actually; but we know what she means) admire and enjoy your "company" I am afraid we shall have to curtail your "visits" unless you can reassure me (her!) that cows are off the menu - so to speak - BBQs etc are OK - you know "what I mean" Bonz.
