Hi slush, Do you have a specific question for wheely?

If so, give me some details and I'll pass them on to him.

He uses the methanol/water injection on his Isuzu MU, it uses a windscreen washer bottle full of 50/50 mix per tank of diesel.
The bloody thing goes like a scalded cat!!

Hi slush,

Don't forget wheely is actually "wheeleybin" when you're searching for him.

I suspect you're looking for post number 40408

Wheeley's Methanol injection consists of a windscreen washer bottle, a pump, a pressure switch and a jet in the inlet manifold.
The pressure switch measures the manifold pressure after the turbo and injects the methanol water mix on an increase in manifold pressure.
The bigger the jet the more mix that is injected.
One of the bonuses of his system is the reduction in exhaust gas temperatures. If I was fitting an aftermarket turbo to say a 1HZ Landcruiser diesel it'd really make exhaust gas temperature concerns obsolete.

As I understand it, the ratio of methanol/watermix to diesel has to be fairly accurate and the injector pump adjusted, is that correct ? Is this suitable for non turbo'd diesels? Are there improvement figures out there ?

Hi Footy,
The way Ian (wheely) tells it there are no adjustments required to the diesel injection system. He talks about using a dyno to choose a suitable jet and set the pressure switch to inject the Methanol/Water mix.

All I can say is I've not been in another diesel 3.1 litre 4wd drive that gets up and goes like Ian's!!
If you could see the size of the trailer he tow's with it, that's another story!!

I had this system in my twin turbo VL commodore years and years ago. It was a windscreen washer bottle, with two pumps, in series to boost the pressure, a irrigation nozzle in the intake just before the turbo, and fifty fifty mix of water and methanol. there was also a solenoid just before the nozzle to stop dribbling. There was a pressure switch and a switch on the throttle, so it only came on *also a switch on the dash to turn it on* when the throttle was fully on and the turbos was on boost. It worked wonders. The car could run 15 PSi boost but any higher and it would ping. The intercooler was not big enough to run much higher boost. When turning on the water injection, 17 psi boost could be safely run without pinging.

I have a aftermarket turbo 1hz now and I am really considering putting it in this too.

oh and the ratio is not cricital, you dont have to adjust your injector pump. This spray of water/methanol is just to "wet" the intake to cool it. Its a form of intercooling, to absorb some of the latent heat in the intake air, to stave off detonation.
Yes its equally recommended on non turbo engines, to help stave off pinging. Its basically suitable for any engine that is running close to its detonation threshold
A freind has a v8 statesman and when he runs standard unleaded, when he gives her the berrys, it pings. With the water injection system running it doesnt ping. With no turbo and no pressure switch to turn on, he just uses a push button, but you could enable it with a dash switch, and a full throttle switch I suppose.
