Hi All,

Am going to Kangaroo Island for xmas. Hping to be on the island on the 22nd and spending a week.
Will there be camping available or will it be very busy. Should I book into a caravan park to be assured of a spot? Was thinking about booking into to the one close to flinders national park. I have tried doing some research in the forum and the national park website.
I have not been there so any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Peter

Look at recent Post No.39908 on this forum. Also "Western K.I. Caravan Park" a privately operated park just outside Flinders Chase National Park (4 km) is quite nice, with a couple of short (1/2 hour) walks laid out. Everywhere over there will be busy over Xmas as the Island is not only popular but also normally a fair bot cooler than the mainland. Best to book ahead, it's a long way to swim back to Jervis Bay if you can't find a site.
The old basic caravan park at Brownlow Beach about 4 km out of Kingscote is O.K. if you are not too fussy, with close by walking access to the (kids) beach on Nepean Bay. It is also close to the best selection supplies etc. in Kingscote town. Other than Penneshaw grocery supplies are very limited or unobtainable elsewhere on the Island. Over 1/3 of K.I. is National Park or similar. The island is a lot bigger than most people think (about 120 km from end to end). Take care on usealed roads (wet and dry) as these have small pebbles that make steering, cornering and stopping a bit tricky. Look out for stray wildlife including "kangaroos" and echidnas.
Check out website www.sealink.com.au (not www.kisealink.com.au) for shipping tickets (may have only limited choices now as so late booking). They have links to other K.I. info sites from the sealink website.
We have just sold our K.I. property with settlement occurring last Friday 15/12/06.
Enjoy!

I agree Arkay. It is a VERY long swim to Jervis Bay. It is not quite so far to Cape Jervis, but there are a lot of sharks!

I also agree with everything in your summary. We had an excellent stay at the Western KI Park in February last year. The wildlife was incredible. We even had a tame possum jump up onto my wife's lap one evening.

The Kingscote Caravan park was basic and they really packed us in. We were involved in a standoff with some other campers because the park owners tried to put four tents on two sites!

We stayed on the island for a week and that was plenty of time to see the lot. We purchased a "tourist pass" and entered all the parks and lighthouses for a discount.

Our Exploroz friend "Ian from Mt Dare" is running the IGA at Penneshaw until the end of January - you might want to call in for an "Exploroz hello".
