I know that it is likely to be hot & the flies can be a problem, but I would appreciate the
views of those who have done the trip, whether it is a realistic route to take to return from the
Flinders Ranges to Qld in January, assuming that it is not wet.
does anyone have any idea as to how much traffic there is likely to be on it at that time of year
Thanks in advance for the sage advice

With a vehicle that can handle the extreme heat levels, adequate spares, plenty of
water (and some more) and reliable communications it would of course be ok - but then, the only people who would usually do such things are those that live and work out there - they know the summer-outback game (or should do, that is). IMO, tourists have to keep one main issue in mind - vehicle breakdown - are you the type to survive ok by the roadside for hours on end, on a treeless plain, with no air conditioner and no shade - with 45-50 degrees and scorching radiation levels ? I love it out there, as many other forumites do, but it can be uncomfortably hot 3-4 months either side of January. Not for me, in Januaree !

Drover,
Yes it will be hot and, depending on the season, flies can be bad. You won't see very many people apart from local traffic.
Once you leave
Lyndhurst (early) the trip to
Innamincka can be done in a long day. Expect
Innamincka to be a lot hotter than your departure point in the South.
If you intend to do this solo, ring the
Ranger station at
Innamincka and let them know your arrival date (forget about the coppers).
Finally, take a lot of
water in case of accident or breakdowns (I can't stress this strongly enough). Canned fruit for kids is also
well received in hot conditions.
Have a good trip
Kim

Drover, I'd be taking some form of communications, UHF and or CB and or sat phone. It can be a long wait for passing traffic even if you havent ventured off the track.
Another factor is age and fitness level. The younger you are, the easier it is. :))

Hi Drover I just returned from Moomba this morning and the Strezleki Track is in very good condition. It took us 4 hrs to drive from Moomba to
Lyndhurst. As for passing traffic there is a large number of trucks servicing Moomba that travel the track every day. From the Cobblers up to Moomba is quite dusty as most of the sand hills are very wind blown and lack any vegetation due to the drought. The reports at Moomba suggested the track from Moomba to Innaminka is in good condition.
PS Just as a matter of interest the first 2 Km north of
Lyndhurst was bitumised last week as part of a trial to see if it is possible to seal the existing road with out doing a major rebuild
