Hi All,

If the Yorke Pennisla is local to you or if you have recently visited can you mark my score card for me.

Our first 3 monther away will include the Yorke P for our first time. We intend to devote 2 weeks to that section of the trip. We won't leave Ballina until after Australia Day 2007 so would expect to be on Yorke about end of February.

I know its a how long is a piece of string question... but can you suggest how long in each place or would you suggest we miss one place and stay longer in the next and once unhitched be more mobile to get off road.

We will be caravaning with 2 well behaved small dogs. We are coastline people... Parks that accept pets are Ardrossan (3.5 stars) Port Vincent (4), Edithburg (4), Marion Bay (3), Port Rickaby(2.5) Moonta (3.5).... I picked up on a recent posting which claimed that their stay at Kadina was spoiled by some permanents that thought they owned the park... forewarned we will miss out on Kadina.

Thanks in anticipation.

I didn't realise Roachie lived in the park........LOL
I guess he can't afford a house now that he has his new toy to spend money on.

Sorry Skier I got a bit off topic.

Thanks for the glowing intro there David....I see you have been spending up big on the Blandcruiser too....new bullbar and roof rack etc..... starting to look pretty good (for a toy...)hahaha

Now, to the question at hand.......

I certainly don't consider myself an authority on the YP....I've lived here for a bit over 4 years, having moved from Yass in NSW.

However, I can certainly add a bit to the discussion if you like. Sounds like you're caravan park type folks.....nothing wrong with that at all, but I'm sorry to say I haven't stayed in any c/van parks on the YP, so I can't give you any advice about which are good/bad etc.

I can tell you that there isn't much in the way of 4 wheel driving on the YP except for some beach/sand driving on both the east coast (around Tiddy Widdy, which is just north of Ardrossan) and also on the west coast. Here you can actually drive reasonable distances along the beaches around Port Rickaby northwards to Wallaroo (with a few diversions around towns like Pt Victoria and Moonta etc).

Innes NP is worth a look, but has been spoilt IMHO by the amount of Koppers Logs fencing etc that the Gistapo have put up all around the show!!!

If you get a chance to go to Pt Vincent, make sure you have a meal at the Hotel Ventour where you may come across EO member AussieChef. The windmill farm just out of Edithburgh is worth a look and there is a nice-looking c/van park at Edithburgh.......(I do take notice of c/van parks when I drive past them, and that one looks quite inviting with it's shaded grassed).

Basically, there are no "bad" spots on the YP. The coast line is the place to be; inland is just farmland and nothing much else. (now ducking for cover from shots to be fired by our farming friends).....

When you're over here, feel free to give us a call...... 08 8821 2090 or 0414 890 148.

Cheers

Roachie

Thanks Roachie,

For the time taken in answering. You clearly have made an impession in your 4 years on YP with fellow EO posters !!!!

You picked us in one. As newcomers to even caravaning we are soft tourists at the moment with the hope that as my school reports used to say ' Room for Improvement."

We will stay a couple of nights at Ardrossan the meander down to Point Turton as a base on the recommendation of Trevor and "explore" the SE from there..

As our trip nvolves looking for somewhere else to live. Never know....
Thanks again for your input.

Hi Skier

We stayed at Butlers Beach on Hillocks Dr (near Warooka bottom end) 88544002 private land lots of coast line to camp at. We ran day trips up and down so we burnt a bit of fuel but found it easier than moving. It has hot showers & flushing loos back up at the office 1km from the camp sites.

1 week will be ample depending on what you want to see. Moonta has most of my early settles in it (Hill) apart from that you have a drive up the coast to the light house and lots of towns with their bric-a-brac in them.

Thanks Trevorfor your reply.

We will certainly have a look at the south East and keep an eye out for Butlers Beach but the Mrs Boss has decided to do it from the "relative" comfort of Point Turton Carvan Park. Maybe as we get more experienced in this 50% of the year caravaning lifestyle we will get more adventurous.

Thanks again for your suggestions and the timeframe. We will make the plans 2 weeks on Yorke a bit flexible in case we move on earlier than we had intended.

hi, we often visit york's and our favourite spot to stay is Point Turton. there is a lovely CLEAN park with VERY friendly owners who allow dogs on leashes. it's a smallish (well not huge) park that is set in an old open cut Gypsum mine so it's quite protected, it has a great camp kitchen with BBQs, micro, full stove/oven, tv ect. and from your van you only need to walk a few steps to be on the jetty for a spot of good fishing or at the sheltered bay with boat ramp. there isn't much in the way of swimming beaches, there is one around the corner from the park that's called the swimming centre, it's ok.
Point Turton is a great spot for exploring the bottom end and the park owners are very helpful for directions around the area. their prices are also quite good. one thing though is to stock up on food before getting there as prices can be a bit on the steep side, except for meat at the Warooka butchers (very nice) the Web site to have a look is- www.pointturton.com
we have also stayed at Ardrossan (that is until we found Point Turton) and that too was quite good, but totally different.
hope this helps you out and you have a great time on Yorks.

Thanks Gonebush SA

This is exactly the type of reposnse we wanted.

Because we are coming in from a distance we will stay a couple of nights at Ardrossan and meander down to Point Thurton and spend 3 or 4 days there looking at the south west. The point turton www site proved irrestistable to the Mrs. She said it looked alot like Kirkton Caravan Park which is across the water at Port Lincoln.

Again our thanks

we too have stayed a Kirton caravan park in Port Lincoln and under hubbies orders are NEVER to return again. we tried it twice and both times there was a storm, our daughter's shoes floated down the hill, hubby helping people fix annexes etc at 2am. we found the people there not friendly, mind you we did go in peak holiday times, and as they wouldn't except bookings we got the last pickings of the sites which to say the least were pretty poor.
i'm sure you will enjoy Point Turton, save travels.

G'Day SKI'er,

We stayed at the Port Hughes Caravan Park, took a fishing charter out from the jetty, (100m away), caught enough fish to last the rest of our three week trip, and had a great time, pity we were only there 1 day.

All of the above passed on by Roachie, great advice

Regards

Rolande

Hi skier,

Have stayed in some of those parks, and worked in some too, and seen all the rest, and all are good, most are on the water, I would work my way down and stay in them all and make your own mind up,

Dont forget to call Roachie and we can make a BBQ night somewhere when your near the top.

Cheers Pesty
