Hi all, mate has 1992 V6 3L pajero and is leaking green coolant from the bottom of timing case cover just above crank pulley. My guess is
water pump. Now this is totaly different set up to hilux obviously where as the pajero doesnt have a shaft behind the fan pulley into block so presuming pump is run of the timing belt ??. I'm fairly confident to pull apart and give him a hand doing it. Is this what I will be facing or is it a totally different set up to what Im thinking. It has done 279,000klms so advised him to do the belt at the same time. He has been quoted $850 for the job including parts. $250 for pump from mitsi and what ever the belt was I presuming around the $30 mark. Would there be any other cause for the
water to be leaking from that spot eg is there any welsh plugs behind the timing case cover. Any help appreciated as I am trying to save him a few $$ befor chrissy. Regards Steve M

water pump does run off timing belt
belt genuine is around $100
usually do cam seals at same time
make sure you change the crank pulley bolt. they have a tendancy to break after being undone and re-tightened...about $10.00
only use genuine mitsu coolant.. its dear. about $65.00 for 4 litres, but the best on the market.. we use it in everything. alfa bmw volvo
i know this has killed your idea of doing it cheap, but do it right

Hi there Donks thanks for that. The pipe you are talking about was replaced brand new 9,000klms ago so shouldnt be an issue. Have read on the mitsi
forum that the
water pump leaks into the inlet valley is this correct ?? The vehicle was facing down
hill we just moved it to face uphill and a bleep load of coolant ran out over gearbox onto ground presuming this is from it pooling in the inlet valley?? Regards Steve M

Stephen.
I have a mate who had the same model Paj' with the same problems.
He tried to go it on his own, & broke a piece off the
water pump casing!
He ended up fixing it with a lot of help from the fitters at work, but admitted (this guy is Croatian!) that he should have gotten it fixed by someone who knows about these vehicles.
$850.00 is ok, considering that it cost me $900.00 for a major service for the Disco' & the mongrels didn't even change the oil, just topped it up!!
Lotsa luck!!

Hi there ozrover, yeah I'm beginning to think its better to get done by a proper mechanic not by myself (backyard mechanic). Its beginning to sound a bit difficult especially if special
tools are required as
well, which no doubt will be the case.I doubt the $850 was including the extra bits an pieces as mentioned above. By the way I'd be bleep your mechanic off if he did a so called major service and only topped the oil up. What a bunch of bleep s. Thanks for the help much appreciated. Regards Steve M

Yeah, this is another situation where cutting costs & maximising profits takes precedence over customer satisfaction!
I'll be going somewhere else next time.

Sounds like the
water pump and that price sounds good to me. I have the same engine in the
Heritage Listed Paj. Not a job I would do myself, the pump is buried between the cylinder banks and a bucket load of stuff has to come off to get at it.
My
water pump was changed a couple of years ago at Mitsi and I paid about the same back then.

Thanks Pete, yeah just spoke to him and told him to get it done by a qualified mechanic. What a whacky set up by mitsi, would hate to be in the middle of nowhere and the pump totally bleep itself.Rang a few
places today for him and the cheapest
water pump is $69 Big difference to genuine but will it last 279.000 like the original one has who knows, told him to go genuine if hes going to hang on to it. I have found with some non genuine parts there always seems to be some thing a bit different, but its his call on that part of it.If he gets it done by mitsi then obviously it will get a genuine part anyway. Much appreciated Regards Steve M

just check the non genuine pumps
they are generally only half the pump. doesn't come with the back half which you will undoubtedly break trying to do the swap
just another trick for
young players
