I am following advice of recent threads re Canon 400D SLR camera choice and will purchase this week.
Question: How do other 400D users keep camera battery charged on long trips away from civilisation and 240V supply?
I imagine that 400D is fairly power hungry (?)
Cheers
Chris

I had the 300d and the battery life was not too bad. After it was stolen i bought the 350d and the battery life is fantastic. Have taken 1277 shota and recharged it only once!! I assume the 400d is the same or better.
I guess you could buy a small inverter to charge the battery.
Good luck
Dave

with the 300D I had a 12volt ciggy lighter kit I got off Ebay from Honkers...
Worked
well..
I also have 5 batteries I also got off ebay $15 each.. they work just as
well as the $50+ Genuine Canon ones.

Hi Chris
The battery life is very good on the Canon.
I would take a small inverter with for the laptop and camera.
It is always best to back up your files.
Some people even burn a cd and mail it back home just in case they are robbed.
Regards
Derek.

Inca have a great setup, you buy the charger around $90 then a base plate to suit your camera around $10.
You can buy different base plates to suit video cameras etc so can get away with one charger and a couple of credit card size baseplates instead of the usual mess.

Hi Chris i have myself a 400D and the camera is "fairly" hungry for power but no more than what a camera of its capability should be. If i was going to be away for more than 1 day taking more than 100odd photos i would be taking another battery with me or finding some why of charging it.
Its mainly about the planing though of how to max ur battery life. dont charge it incorrectly, dont just fool around with it and u will find you will have more than enough power for a day or 2 without power.
be sure to link some of your photos you do! :D

Likewise with the 350D.
300W Inverter running off a 100AH AGM dual battery to charge the camera battery.
Storage is 2X1gb and 1X512mb CF cards and an old laptop with a 10gb hard drive.

Bought the 400D a few weeks ago.
Got two batteries just in case. They're only about $30 each.
Have taken about 500 images with each battery before needing recharge, including about 20% with built in flash.

I have the 400D with battery grip and it lasts for ages.
As soon as I turn the camera on I turn the LCD display off.

Have also just bought a 400D - the other replies are pretty spot on with what I was told in the
shop (approx 500 photos depending on flash use etc).
Good luck in getting hold of one though - there was a huge shortage in
Perth last weekend when we got ours - had to ring around quite a bit. Dont even bother trying to get the enthusiast kits before Xmas - bit of a bummer cos cant get the $350 cashback from Canon on the lens. NSW may be different to WA tho in terms of supply.
In case your interested ended up getting the bog standard 18-35mm lens and then a 200mm USM lens (better than the dual lens kit zoom lens) for $1,700 all up. Not the best price in the world but thats the supply/ demand situation for you!
Cheers

Thanks Darren and all others. Very helpful.
My own talking to Canon (no adaptor/charger available for 400D) and after market suppliers is that the $90 charger and $10 adapter approach might be the most economical way for my purposes. Had considered using large capacity SD cards and frequent culling as the way to manage the storage issue. Had not really given thought to the prospects of theft though. Might have to review and and send cards/CD home at intervals.
Will post a few phots in coming months
Thanks again
Peace and smiles
Chris

hey chris,
you won't regret the inca charger, the versatility and overall economy makes it great.
For storage we invested in a laptop, a cape trip next year means we had to be self sufficient. You don't need lots of storage just the ability to burn.
After all the options we found this to be best.
Good luck and happy snapping

I have a 350D
For storage I have a portable harddrive similar to the one in this link: www.card-media.co.uk/digimagic+dm180.htm
Mine is 40GB and I can actually upgrade by just replaceing with a 1.8" hdd when the need arises. For storage, I find my two genuine Canon batteries last ages, and if they give up while I am away from 240V, then I also have a battery grip which takes AA batteries aswell so I can use rechargeables with a 12v charger.

No-one has mentioned the CBC-NB212v charger for the NB-2LH battery (used by the 400D), is there any reason why people aren't using this? I have 12v chargers for all my electronic stuff (laptop, pda, gps, camera) and was hoping to get away without buying an inverter.

Maybe one reason is that it costs $150!
