Can anybody set me on the right track?
Mate and I are looking to "do" the Gunbarrel but a bit confused where it starts and ends.
Explore Oz treks indicate it beginning at Docker River or abouts, but some of my maps see it start on the Sturt Hwy about Kulgera!
Also there is reference to the "abandoned" section.
Is this a goer or not?
Any response will be welcomed.
Happy Christmas to all.

Think that the trip from Kulgera to Docker is just the start up ...Kulgera is on the Sturt Highway..from there to Yulara ...all bitumen ...from Yulara to Docker ...mainly ?all gravel...then its teh Gunbarrel.... have n't been out there but hope you enjoy it ...

Another is calling a Koala a bear, every time I hear that stupid saying it's like a GONG in my ears, BOING oh no not again. What about Tiger snakes mating with Pythons and now all of a sudden after millions of years the damn Pythons are poisonous......Idiots.

GB hwy starts at Victory Downs SA and goes to Carnegie WA

You can travel the "abandoned" section with permit and conditions

I'll second that!!!

It's disrespectful to history how some people, or information providers, say that it runs through Yulara or Docker River. Don't they do their research????

This is one of those occasions when if people hear or read about a subject often enough, in this case incorrectly, they believe it.

Looking for adventure.

Hey there Mal. If you haven't already, you should read Len Beadell's book "Too Long in the Bush". Gives you a great appreciation for the area around there and the process that went into making the road.

Here's the go . GB starts at Mt Cavenagh on the Stuart HWY, south of Kulgera . travel out to Mulga Park and turn north . The GB go'es straight on , but is a closed road . Go north to the Lasseter HWY , turn left . Out past Yulara , Uluru and Olgas . You will need a permit to go past the check point after Yulara . On to the Tjukaruru Rd to Docker River and over the NT, WA border to Giles . The GB rejoines about 50 Kl's befor Giles . This is where the abandoned section starte's from , but unless there is 3 or more vehicle's , thay more than likely won't won't give you a permit . Travel down to Warburton . If you can get permission , you can out to Jackie Junction and rejoin the GB , turn left . Failing getting permission , travel out to the start of the Heather HWY , turn right , go out 48 k's (approx ) turn right , remove teeth , put in safe place so you don't lose them when thay fall out , go another 38 k's (approx) , turn RIGHT ! , onto the GB ,go about 6k's to , i forget the name of the hill , but there is a lookout there with some good view's . Then back track the 6 k's and continue on the GB to Carnegie station and Wiluna . Make sure you get the permit , becouse if thay ask you for it and you haven't got it , you will have to go back to Yulara to get it .You may have a few hour's wait there . Have good trip

Thay will be NT Parks & Wildlife . I know several people who have been caught and spent up to 6 unwanted hour's at Yulara waiting for the permit to come through . Mind you , we've been through there about 8 or 9 times , and only been asked once . But is it worth the risk of haveing to wait .

Your advice is very vague Errol.

You only need to pay to go into Uluru/Katatjuta NP. But to go beyond that you need a permit from

A. The Central Land Council from the National Park to the NT Border and

B. The Ngaanyatjarra Council from the NT/WA Border and beyond

If you state that you are travelling through the National Park you then have to produce the permits to travel on the roads mentioned. Once that is accepted then the NP fee is waived.

Thank goodness I travelled all of those roads before all this permit BS.

Along other tracks you will have to be very unlucky to be asked to show a permit. Most people out there couldn't care less. I only apply for permits into sensitive and out of the way places, not accessed by the hoi polloi.

Cheers

I have just consulted my copy of “Too Long in the Bush.” The map in the front of the book, which is signed by Len, shows the Gunbarrel starting at Victory Downs as Richard stated in reply 2. It travels along to the north of the NT border and crosses into SA north of the Musgrave ranges. It crosses into WA Just S of the NT border and swings up to Giles. From there it travels west, then a little to the north and swings around in an arc down to Warburton. North of Warburton at a place Len at this stage called Forty Mile Turnoff on this map (later Jackie Junction) the Gunbarrel heads west to Carnegie Station.

These days when travellers say they are “doing the Gunbarrel” they head out from Yulara, go past Docker river, call into Giles and head straight to Warburton and on to Laverton. The only bit of Len's road they actually travel on is 29 km east of Giles and 16 km west of Giles. But I suppose they have travelled some of the Gunbarrel.

Hema map 79 clearly shows the western end and map 90 shows the eastern end marked as "Mulga Park Road.

Sometimes the respones to incorrect posts are the best way to "get the picture". Missing the simplicity of the back blocks. Have a good Chrissy to all those that may read this.
