Hi Guys

I got quite a surprise today. I took my kids for a day at the Redcliffe Settlement Cove Lagoon (QLD, Brisbane) and driving there found a heap of caravans set up in the oval of Humpybong State School, just before Redcliffe. This school is right across the road from Margate Beach and obviously must let people camp (there was no tents) over the school holidays.

This is the school's website humpybongss.eq.edu.au/wcmss/

Does anyone know about this? I've searched the net and can't find anything. I only live about an hours drive away from Redcliffe, but would love a few nights camping there. I'd imagine they'd use the school toilets.

I'll stop and ask one of the caravan people next time we go there (which will be soon, we had a fabuolous day swimming and feeding the turtles at the lagoon near Sandgate train station). I just wanted to know if anyone had camped there or knew about it.

I wonder if other schools in scenic locations let people camp on their schoolgrounds. Was a great idea.

It was probably an organised group rather than just a 'public' campground.

Schools often allow their gronds and facilities to be utilsed by travelling groups/teams/whatever during holidays but only with a valid certificate of currency.

Know a couple of coastal schools that hire out their oval to various RV/van clubs.
As you say, only need an insurance certificate, and from memory the public liability needs to be for $5m minimum. Qld dept education requirement.

Details of the Humpybong SS caravan site were on the net sometime back. If I recall the school encourages certain clubs to use the facilities during school holidays for a fee. It minimises vandalism over the break periods. Plenty of nomadic night watchmen / security wardens in attendance.

There was something like this on one of the 'lifestyle' shows recently.
Where a school, opposite a beach, allowed camping on their oval, I can't remember if there was fee involved or not though.

During the school hollidays, the Budina school here on the sunshine coast has campers and caravans on their grounds, the local caravan parks are full up and that takes the overflow.

Yeah I lived in Redcliffe for years and it is an annual migration of the grey nomads from what I can tell. I have no idea who to get in touch with but come end of year school holidays the place fills up with vans... Like you say the location is fantastic I reckon....
