Ok have finished putting together our Satellite dish and setup for the new caravan. It allows us to watch Select TV and Optus Aurora service.

What I found was that a lot of the advertised Satellite kits are outragously priced, some up around $1,600 plus and the more resonable just under the $800 mark.

I put together a kit for the cost of:

Srt 4658 (Strong Satellite receiver with dual pay tv card slots)
CI Module (used for 2nd slot) (accepts cards like the Aurora TV, Foxtel, select TV etc)
65 CM Dish & mounting hardware
LNB
Satellite Finder

Total Cost $320.00

As a few web sites point out Digital is Digital and no matter whether you buy a $2,000 setup or a $320 setup the result is a perfect digital picture.

You can get Satellite receivers for as little as $150 and a dish for $60-$80

I put a 2nd Dish on the roof at home and we are watching Select TV, great service by the way .. gives you a lot of the great channels same as foxtel for a fraction of the cost.

Hi RussellB With the price of the setup what are you being charged for select tv and are there any set up charges and how many channels do you get , what is your opinion of the programs . We are going with the disc for free to air what channels do you think we will get in WA. I live in South west WA and we had 10 mls of rain last night but there was a few areas that ended with over 40 mls one bloke up north of Geraldton said he has never seen as much water kicking around in all his life , at least the stock will have something to drink even though they have nothing to eat . Cheers and merry christmas from Roughneck

There is no setup, I set it up myself, pretty easy.

The Select TV card was $29.95 to buy and then you can subscribe at $29.95 a month with no contracts.

The channels you get are very very good 3 movie channels, nat Geographic, action channel, MTV, CNN, BBC , kids channel, US entertainment news, couple of sports channels (overseas) and a heap of others .. having had Foxtel in the past which was very expensive as you had to add all their packages just to get the basic channels you wanted select TV seem to package most of the similar good channels that you get with foxtel into their basic package (you do miss out on a couple) ... I can highly recommend Select TV www.selecttv.com.au

With the Aurora free to air channels, what is the price for the service and is it a monthly contract.?
Do you use the same box for the house or did you buy a second one.?

I would like to contact you after the chrissy hols about suppliers etc.

Hi Russel,
What sort of total current consumption at 12v are we looking at for your installation?
I assume that the receiver is powered by 240v, so an inverter is used.

Then I jump into the melee and offer free, yes that is absolutley FREE or you can have two absolutley free copies of the Satelite finder software that my brilliant son designed when I had a sat TV and got the irrates trying to line the dish up. You enter your lat & long from ether your GPS or a guestimate from a map via the drop down menus, click on calculate & up pops your required elevation and azimuth. You can also choose your satellite from the drop down menu. To get this amazingk bargain simply email me at :
sydney-riley@hotmail.com & I will at absolutley no cost send the software back to you as an attachment...
If you wish me to demonstrate this software I only charge $750 an hour + costs but even a pimply faced tosser could use it it is so simple....
Over to the Sat TV fans....

we have just set up ours we paid $430 delivered the kit included dish,lnb,20m cable,tv cables, wall connectors, coship receiver, card, excellent plain english instruction book with all the town degrees and the service has been fantastic had an issue with setting it up so phoned satplus and they talked me through it over the phone and also said if there a fault with the receiver they send you a new one straight away and you send the other one back when you can.We also can get the b3 satellite as well as the main optus c1.
For the stand i bought one of those camping clothes lines from k-mart and use the bottom half works a treat.$25
You get about 16 channels on optus c1 and around 20 on b3 but a lot of overseas channels.
So far have not needed a sat finder but if i do the digital one is the best.

Yes I could not agre more satplus.com.au was where I bought the Caravan Dish (much better quality than the ebay dish) they were very helpfull and were happy to answer any questions.

I guess what it all means is that for around $400 you can get a good starting kit rather than have to pay some of the very very expensive prices out there.

The only thing I did not get was the list of Towns and aiming data , but there's plenty of info online.

At the moment I have not set the van up for 12V so all is 240V.

Once I recover from buying the van the next outlay will be to fit it out for 12V

oh .. but first I have to fit my early Xmas present reversing camera kit :-)
