Hi guys. My son has just purchased a 94 Hilux with a V6 Holden (VR Model) conversion. It has a new std Hilux diesel gearbox (broke input shaft after he purchased it) and std dif ratios, I think. It is also running 33" mud tyres. It is using about 18lts per 100km. Not good. Seems to be running OK but smells a bit rich from the exhaust. Any ideas on reason for excess fuel consumption or would this be considered normal for this setup.
Any ideas would be welcomed.
Regards Phil and Shaun....

Hi Phil and Stan,
If you are worried aboutr excessive fuel consumption ditch the mud tyres and run 31 in at or even better for fuel economy h.t. You will pick up 100ks per tank. Brother had m.t. just on the back of his ute for paddock use and lost 50ks per tank. Get the motor tuned by someone who knows what they are doing. Cheers Pete

Thanks pete, Friend advised it should be running on 30psi of fuel pressure. Still looking for suitable pressure gauge. Will check out a set of 31" tyres from a friend. Just need better consumption as the car seems good.

2 sugestions

is the speedo callibrated fo 33"s

if it is running rich, check O2 sensors ... common issue but can have the computer re-calibrated cheaper than replacing sensors. my vs commode had the same issue. went from 450km hwy per tank to 750km

donks

Its a common issue with such conversions as many only fit the engine and leave it at that etc.

They don't do the final bit and match the rpm's with the engines torque etc by changing the diff ratios to suit and especially when fitting larger tyres such as 33's. I'd say his diff ratios are wrong for the current combination hence the fuel consumption.

Alby -

Didn't you and Shaun learn anything when that handsome young bloke that used to be on your crew bought a HiLux with a bodgy Holden engine in it?

I'll refresh your memory-

He spent heaps of money, heaps more time and at the end of the day still couldn't get to work on time...

At least a lesson was learned: The worst thing you could ever do to a trusty Toyota is ruin it by putting a bloody Holden engine in it!

ps.Good luck with the new truck Shaun.

pps.Life aint so bad chuggin along in a diesel.

ppps.Who the hell is Stan?

G-day Matt. You must be confusing me with someone else you have worked with. I can't remember ever working with you. I can't remember you ever working. As for your anti V6 conversion comments, your car must have been worked by an angry Red Headed person (now grey) as this car was purchased from a good christian person in good will and advised of good fuel consumption. Engine works well and it has a normal cooling system and great suspension. I think you got ripped off. Didn't anyone ever tell you not to by a yellow 4WD. Good luck Stan
Regards Alby.... Happy New Year.....
