Merry Christmas folks
Recently I posed the question on experiences with either Jeep Commander/Grand Cherokee or Pajero as a choice in new 4WD.
Well, I got a lot of replies. Some really useful and others... Anyhow, one of you suggested a Disco 3. So down to the Land Rover dealer I go to test one and cross it off my list. (The last new Land Rover I bought was in 1974.. a series 3 SWB) Anyhow.. I was so impressed that I ordered one yesterday. No, not diesel but petrol V6. Yes, I know it chews fuel, but the pay back time on a diesel would be way past the end of my 4 year lease period. Apart from superb comfort, the most impressive thing is the internal use of space. Virtually the same size as a Jeep, it has nearly 25% more space in it. I loved the Jeep, but not enough space; especially in the driver's foot
well. The Pajero. Nice car, but the current model has what I think is poor quality plastics on the dash etc. In fact I was very disappointed as it was going to be my choice. My current Hyundai Tucson has better quality of finish. If you don't believe me, compare yourself.
Anyhow.. many thanks for the input and especially to the one who suggested looking at a Disco 3.
Cheers

Good to see that we could be of help......even if you did choose the wrong vehicle :-)
BTW, what was the best vehicle financially based on a 4 year lease, as we may be looking down that track next year sometime? Was the Disco the best or up there with others, or did it just come down to the feel of the vehicle in the end ;-)
Have a good christmas, even if you have to wait a little longer for Santa this year....

Well... the "Official" on road price here in
Brisbane for a Disco 3 V6 SE is $71K and the Pajero Petrol is $74K. (Both approx)
At the moment, Disco have some going out for $64 on the road. We chose some options like rear AC etc that pushed ours up past that. Financed through
Bendigo Bank at 4 year 40% residual and it is around $1200 per month. When we looked at others, I did a simple EXCEL spread sheet and based on 20K km per year and using the official govt fuel consumption figures, the break even points for diesel were around 4 years for a Jeep and around 4.5 for a Pajero. Land Rover finance have a 5 year 50% resid going at the moment, but I prefer 40% in case I want out at 3 years or so.
Now just waiting for Jan 2 so I can bring the baby home :-)

Hi Mark,
I am going thru a similair thing shortly. When you did your costings, did you take into account the better resale price of a diesel vehicle compared to a petrol i.e. not asume both has say 70% residual value after 3 years?
On paper, the petrol appears to wins out but take a look at any 3 or 4 year old vehicle and compare diesel to petrols. They seem to hold their resale much better, thus you recoup the original higher price and on balance come out in front of a petrol.
Just curious (not critical) if your costing did this as I have to make a similair decision shortly.
Cheers

Hope you enjoy your vehicle, even if I do agree with Andrew about the choice. ;-)
I was one of the members who replied to your original post, and if I thought you would have looked at anything other than the Jeep or Paj I would have told you to take the Volkswagen Touareg for a drive, I believe the V6 is around the $65 to $70 mark and the you also have the 5 cylinder and V6 diesels. Comfort and features leave all the reast in their wake.

Yes the Touregt.. great thing.. I ran a tape measure around the inside with all seats folded. Again the Disco 3 is bigger. You see for my business and my wifes business the Disco 3 will be acting a large part of its life as a huge panel van.

Yes.. resale.
Good point.
Well.. as the Disco 3 is very new.. I don't really know what resale will be worth in 4 years.
Then on top of that, LR are asking around 10K for a diesel engine.
That's just too much in my opinion. It may have more torque, but it has less kw and that is what gets you to the top of a
hill first.
LR's own figures show the TDi is very slow 0 - 100.
Anyhow... you could be right.
I'll know in 4 years.

Tis why I went the jeep, that crd motor is a ripper! Your quite right about the foot
well being a bit tight but I like driving with no shoes anyway and find it fine.
I did like the Disco alot but the price and the diesels gutless performance put me off. Be interesting how you find the petrol......

Yes Stu.. the petrol bill will be "interesting?'
I guess we'll use my wifes Z4 for small errands to try to offset all of this.
The Jeep Diesel is fabulous, so is the whole Jeep thing.
But it always comes back to the amount of room with all the seats down for our commercial purposes.
Have a nice XMAS mate.
