I am thinking of replacing my 4.5 80 series with a 3 to 4 year old 100 series for towing a Kimberley that is arriving soon. The old 80 just doesn't seem to have enough power any more. Not sure which way to go for grunt. Realise fuel economy is better with diesel but would like to know what the V8 tows like.

My sister had a V8 petrol 100 series to tow the horse float. Switched to a turbo diesel 100 series when the lease ran out on the V8 and reckons the diesel towed much better, also heaps cheaper to run.

Too easy, just compare torque figures ? Without looking them up, would think the diesel comes up trumps.

My Jackaroo with a 3.0 L TD has 118kw - tows our somewhat heavy Campomatic trailer nicely - plenty of power for all sorts of fourby situations - highway passing, crawling along sandy creekbeds, stone hopping up hills - whatever - a KK towed by a TD Navara has been with us on some trips - a winner setup also. The 100 series will be about 500kg heavier than the Jack but the TD version should have 150KW - in my view, tons of power for a camping load and the KK.

Yeti,
Did 16000 Ks last year with a 2 tonne Kimberley hanging off the back of the 80 Series petrol. Consumption was 24.8 Ltrs/100 , all over the NT and northern WA and back to Syd.
Talked to many V8 100 owners and all were using in excess of 30Ltrs/100 towing,
the Turbo diesel guys were using about 18 Ltrs towing .
Never ever thought the 80 did't have enough power and I cruise at about 105 towing the van.
Congratulation on the Trakkie, you will love it.

Dozer, I doubt the new model will spell disaster for 100 TD's in the same way every TD landcruiser wagon yet made is worth big $ secondhand. You can bet the new model will continue in the same vein, premium priced and hard to get. Besides it's nearly a year away and 100 TD's are all finished so there will be a pent up demand for used ones.

You could consider another brand, if you are open minded.

A Patrol 4.8 on LPG will give you more power and torque than either that you are considering and will be far, far, cheaper to run.

I suggest this because Nissan will warrant their vehicles on LPG, but Toyota won't.

Jimbo, The TD Landcruiser has more torque at 1400rpm than the 4.8 Nissan has at its peak at 3600rpm. The V8 has more torque.

Go with Turbo diesel 'Cruiser - as long as it's a 100 series with the 1hdt-fe motor.

It's a racehorse when solo and will pull all you'll ever need at speeds that will scare you.

I used to tow an 18 foot, almost 3 tonne caravan up to 100 kmh, come up behind a road train and pass it without blinking an eye at 140 kmh and still pulling.

That 100 series TD motor is an absolute pearler of an engine. It's even better than my current Patrol with a 6.5 litre Chev V8 diesel in it and that's saying something.
