Can anyone tell me the difference in fuel consumption between the 2006 Prado diesel vs petrol. From research the diesel has a servicing scedule of 5k against the petrol engine which is 10k. I am considering trading in my 2001 3 litre Patrol which has been a great car but now require smaller automoatic 4x4.
Regards

I recently drove a 2006 Prado from
Katherine to Top Springs and return.
My opinion is that the Prado is a heap of faeces.
I can drive for thousands of kms in my patrol without a back ache. I had a backache before I had done 100 kms.
There is a handle above the drivers door. I can understand the purpose of a panic handle for the passengers but the only purpose that handled served was to strike me in the right forehead every time I hit a bump.
The
suspension is so inadequate that every time I hit a bump the vehicle would jerk from side to side.
It was a manuel and every time i wanted to change gear I had to lean forward to reach the gear stick.
I suggest you drive one first before making your decision.
If you do buy one remove the handle, upgrade the
suspension and purchase after market seats. As you are purchasing an automatic the gear stick will not be so annoying.
PS Merry Christmas and remember the christmas spirit is not what your drink.

I find my prado 2005 model very comfortable. It does have uprated
suspension but the fuel economy is not what I expected.
Around town I average 14 l per 100 and the best on a trip is 12.6 l per 100.
The around town mileage is travelled very sedately as
well.
Mine is a TD auto.
The new common rail d4d is better on fuel.
The v6 gets a little worse fuel economy but when you go off road it rises dramatically. However they are cheaper to maintain.
I have given up on economy on
mine as toyota says there is nothing wrong. I will trade it when the lease is almost up. I will go back to a cruiser I think.
The new diesel is 10 000 km serviceing so will reduce the maintenance costs a bit.
You can have a look at my webpage as it may offer some answers.

Hope this helps

We have a 2005 120 series TD Auto Prado. I have had and have driven a number of 4WDs and his vehicle is the best I've experienced. I describe it as a very me car. It is true about the grab handle by the drivers head. I am just over 6 ft. tall It is easy to remove the grab handle. I then screwed a couple of
grey plastic "bungs" about 1" diameter in the holes. It looks quite neat, un-noticeable.
We have done just over 23,000km of which 80% was towing a tandem Jayco
Heritage van. We use Heathers' car around town mostly. I keep meticulous records. The Prado has averaged 14.82 litres per 100 km since we have had it. A recent hurried trip
Adelaide to
Mildura without the van and back in hot weather averaged 11.1 litres/100km. Can't give you a specific city figure as I have never done a fill-to-fill with pure city driving.
***** I love having 180 litres of fuel range available *****.
The new CRD Prado sounds excellent power & fuel wise, but $49,999 drive away no more to pay that ours cost will purchase a fair bit of diesel. I find the power adequate. Compared to our previous towing 4WD it is heaps better. So we are happy litle Christmases.
I have a comparison print out form our local Toyota dealer which shows the total cost of standard handbook servicing for 100,000km for the petrol model as being $3714.55, and the diesel model $4,080.40. I can send you a photocopy if you give me your address through the members system.

The Prado 4.0 V6 is a nice engine, but gets thirsty when driven, and is only avail as an automatic (which you are after).
Compared to the Patrol the TD Prado will seem a little slow, but is has a good torque curve, however it runs out of huff at the top end. This can be fixed with some tuning -
mine now performs much nicer after a couple of mods.
However the new Prado with the 1KD-FTV engine will have not only more power, but a heap more torque than your current Patrol. This would be my choice.

"Common Rail Diesel"
The 1kD-FTV is the new (to oz anyway) motor in the Prado and it uses the common rail injection system. Most (all?) manufacturers are now using this technology on their current diesel engines.
