Sounds like an electrical problem with maybe a broken wire shorting out.. Probably a 10 min job for an auto elec, or could be a 12 hour job for me or you..

The brake is releasing?

They are a good thing the GQ Tailshaft handbrake. Just rebuilding a mates one at the moment, parts are cheaper than I expected even from Nissan!

Hi Robert

Sounds like the micro swich at the bottom of the handbrake lever is stuffed ( broken spring) when the hand brake is applied it turns this swich on if the swith has a broken spring it will not return to the off position when the hand brake is released.
Should be easy for you to repair, remove the center console and have a quick look will save you $$$ at a auto elec.

Are you shure its the hand brake lamp ?
Its probly low on brake fluid. . . .brake symbol on dash comes on and people get confused that its the hand brake lamp.

Top-up the fluid . . . will most probley *fix your problem*

Robert,

Don't know if this helps, but I sometimes get the same issue in my 80 series Cruiser and all it is is the float that sits in the brake fluid sometimes gets caught which for some reasons causes the light to stay on.Australia rocks!

Robert.
Its dead easy to tell if its the switch or the float just unplug them one at a time. Eric
