I have a '97 Prado which was recently recalled to fit new rear axles. Apparently some failed under hard use and Toyota did a recall.
I have just noticed that my Prado has developed a Thrum, Thrum, Thrum noise similar to an out of balance driveshaft, or an out of round tyre. This is mostly noticeable at 80 km/h plus on very smooth seal but may be getting worse. I have checked the tyres and pressures which I run at a few psi above standard.
Although an older Prado it is still in original condition and has had a very easy life. I wish that I had been more observant when I got it back from Toyota. The recall was in early 2006 but I waited until August when my normal service was due to get the work done.
I guess that it has to go back but I am unsure of how much emphasis to put on the new rear axles. Any advice or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Depends on what they actually did.
However, it sounds suspiciously like a bearing.
Now, if the axles were replaced the bearings should have been as
well, then again you never know unless you were there and watched the whole process.
Also, it is possible that they were changed (bearings) and one of them is/was a dud.

Obvious to all and sundry who had a good X-mas morning, lunch, afternoon & dinner.
I'll have you know by the way that the JEEP has worked its way through all the JEEP 'nuances' that a sent as a test of ones patience and has been dash board light free now for approx 4 months.
That is a record for this vehicle and no doubt it will stay that way ( I hope).
Merry X-mas to you an yours and may you not lose any more 'digits' (or part there of) as punishment for bagging gods gift to 4WD-ing - THE JEEP.
You and BONZ make a good pair. (ROFLMAO)

Thanks Lucy. Perhaps you would have been safe if I had asked about a cooking recipe. Thanks also to Bilbo but if it is a dealer problem it's best that they have a look first. I will keep your tips for later.

It sounds like dodgy bearings. Often the bearings have to be removed to change the seals. If so, they could have stressed the bearings taking 'em off and shouldn't really have refitted the old ones - if they actually had to remove 'em at all.
But try something simple first. Try undoing the prop shaft bolts at the diff and turning the prop shaft through 90 degrees and rebolting it. Test drive it. If it doesn't work try doing it again at 180 degrees. Then try it 270 degrees.
Strangely enough it can make a difference. When I was 'mechanikking' fer a living I fixed a few by doing just this.
Be careful. Some prop shafts have offset bolt holes and they won't line up at 90 degrees and 270 degrees. Prados, I don't know,,,,,,,

Hi Brockie,
I too had my axles changed under the recall. The job involved axles, wheel bearings and backing plates, so it won't be wheel bearings.
Maybe the tail shaft wasn't put back in the correct position.

Bill
