Just wondering what sort of cd/radio/mp3 player people have in their truck. I am about to purchase a new one for mine and I do know I want a "name" brand rather than an unknown or weird named brand.
I would like a loudness control as well as bass and treble boost etc. Pretty lights are totally optional and OK if they come with it. Certainly not a must have.
A cd player that doesn't skip is a must as I do live in NQ and the roads are not like the southern highways.
I have a leaning towards Kenwood though Sony also looks OK.

If your system in your vehicle needs replacing then I suggest a pioneer. I had one in my old patrol and found it skipped less than other brands.

If your old system in your vehicle still works then I suggest you purchase a portable MP3 player and an FM modulator. This is what I have done. My MP3 player has a 20 gig capacity and can hold about 10,000 songs. That is enough music to last for a trip and is a much cheaper option than purchasing a new system for your vehicle.
Life's great and it just keeps getting better

Hi,

I recently installed a mp3 player with speakers from SCR. They also installed a pocket in the double din opening.

All works a treat for under $400

Hope this helps

Have fitted Sony and Alpine to patrols and would go the Alpine again if I had the choice.. the Sony has skipped since Flinders.. but not sure if its disc, but it is under warranty (LMAO - warranty these days)...

both play MP3/4, and DVD's.

I'd agree with the quality of Alpine gear, although not an MP3/4/7/etc player the 11 year old stacker i now have in the LC60 (with tired springs) only skips in the worst of roads.

Pioneer DEH-P4650MP
Its over 2 years old and is similar to most of the entry-level Pioneer stuff.
- done the rough corrugated tracks - won't skip. But in my truck can't hear anything on those tracks anyway :-))

Phil, is this a double DIN model (jeez don't I sound like I know what I'm talking about!), or single (normal) like unit. I've been looking at the Pioneer D/D model with 7" touch screen and 6 disc changer behind it. Knowing the tracks I intend taking, I'd be glad of any feedback for the pioneer units (ie; is it going to survive the Gunbarrel, Canning and Kidson in one hit?). Ta. Mick O.

Mick,
Its just a normal single DIN - probably cost about $200 these days. I used to have my UHF in there with it, but slipped in a Reversing camera screen last year.

Mines done Anne Beadell x2; Gunbarrell, Heather Hwy, Connie Sue Hwy, Madigan Line x2, and a heap of other trips - still works fine after 2 years. I don't usually play it on corrugated roads, but tried it a few times to see whether I could make it skip and it wouldn't. I usually use it for MP3 so I can fit a heap of music on each CD.

I bought the Pioneer because my son recommended them from his doof doof mates :-))

I have a JVC with USB port on the front Panel, with a 1GB flash drive I load up about 300 MP3s and just push it into the port and the reproduction is fantastic, no matter how rough the road/corrugation it won't / can't skip , there is no moving parts or disc , at $275.00 I think is good value

why not get an MP3/WMA player that does DVD's and you can have ~1000 songs depending on bitrate...

I like 320 or 256, but sometimes have to go with 128....

Because its in a 4by you will definately wanna steer clear of cheaper brands. Ive got a JVC mp3/cd/radio reciever, goes pretty well. Still skips a lil, but i think thats a defect in it because it used to do it in the Excel too. Depending on budget I wouldnt bother with a dvd, just becuase unless you are ulra ultra organised or get one with an LCD screen (lotsa $$$) You will have a hard time finding the songs you want. Ide spend up on a better quality mp3/cd/radio unit. Ask about the quality of the ESP (Electronic Shock Protection) cos that will stop it cutting in and out of the music. Good brands to look into are Eclipse, Clarion, Alpine (i rate these above the rest, but just my opinion), then Pioneer, JVC, Sony and Kenwood.

As for loudness control and equilizer, most, if not all decent players will come with them. Also, if you are getting it installed professionally, treat yourself to some new speakers too, you will thank yourself for it :P

Laslty look to spend $275 as a minimum (that depends on budget of course). Im happy to look into some for ya if ya like. Just send us an email.

Hope that helps.

Cheers, Anand.

Hi Angler,
I have just bought a "BOSS" unit from Strathfields that has SD Card slot USB port for under $200, sounds great, no skips. Just remember to create folder/s on the SD card or it will spit the dummy when trying to save the songs to t at about 500Mb on a 1 Gig card.

Pooley,

I recently stuck in a Pioneer DEH-4850MP into my Patrol. it has all the bells and whistles. It seems to do what you are looking for. I changed the speakers before replacing the head set. I put in a set of Pioneer TS-A1681. For me this made a big difference the sound quality.
