Johnny boy
Well I keep on putting it off but now I'm forced to make a decision on TV reception I have a new van and an old little 35cm TV I also have a sat dish I bought from a garage sale and I'm thinking of setting it up on a painters extension pole on the side of the draw bar and I have been quoted $112 for a sat meter ( that finds the sat ) and $100 for the digital setop and $70 for the OPTUS card ,I think I still need things like a compass ( to find NORTH ) and the RG6 Quad cable and connectors which I can make myself ( I sometimes fit CCTV for work) I also believe there is a printed out A4 size book with sat positions and graphs which I have no idea how to obtain so my question is am I on the right track as I feel I have some of the gear and it wont cost an arm or leg to set up so if any of you guys or gals can help PLEASE!!!
drop me a line as I have to set this up before I go away on the 4th jan and thank you for taking the time to read this post as I'm sure this has been discussed a few times but I'm unsure if they have tried to set up there own ?
Regards J.B

We have a sat TV in our van, had it a couple of yrs now. $112 for the sat finder sounds a bit high I am sure you would get one under $70. You will need to make your dish on a portable stand. You need to do this as you will find you will always need to find a gap in trees etc so having it attached to the van is not the best way to go. I made up a portable tripod that pegs down to the ground, it's very successful. Having a compass to get a rough bearing on the satellite is good to have, you only need a cheap one just to get the general direction from the position you are in and the sat finder will do the rest. You should be able to find a site on the net that gives you the positions of the satellite around Australia but not sure where the site can be found. Someone else may be able to help you with this.
It takes a bit at first to get used to lining up the dish but after a few goes you will find it gets quite easy.
Happy New Year - Nav!

Here is a site where you can find where the satelites are www.lyngsat.com/index.html
You should be able to pick up a sat finder for $20-25 but they are basic. Maybe the one you have been quoted is a little better.
