hi everyone, i had the 1hz with 140000 on it and it had a heavy knocking noise on start up. i am relieved to say that i have fixed it rather simply. one night i reversed my car up the driveway to collect some rubbish, this driveway is slightly down hill , not much maybe 3-5 degress. in the morning i started my vehicle and to my surprise the start up noise wasnt there. so that afternoon i put an extra 1litre of oil in the engine ,and the noise has stayed away ever since. so conclusion is that the dipstick maybe incorrectly marked. ( i remember i had a 1995 1hz and it was excactly 1 litre from low to high. and this one - 2001 model- i have now is only half a litre from low to high- strange ey ). any way will see how it goes.

hey samagoneagain

I also have a 1hz motor and it used to knock on start up again, i found it would start to knock at around the same time as it needed a oil change bout every 5000km, change the oil and she's smooth again. But the real cause is the valves need adjustment at around 140000km, but you need the proper toyota tool to do it, feeler gauges and have a fair idea of what your doing. Or just go to toyota for adjustments, lots easier

As long as you have a dealer you trust - a mate of mine tried the old superglue the hair between the tappet cover and block trick to see if they actually did adjust the valves; sure enough the hair was unbroken after the 'service'. This was a Toyota dealer in Brisbane. (It was a Corolla, not a Landcruiser)

When challenged, they said they just listened to the valves, and if not noisy, didnt adjust them. 2 problems with this - they charged him anyway and, quiet valves may well be tight valves which in time become burnt valves.

Actually you can do it without the specialist Toyota tool and it's a pretty easy job.

You may be suprised to learn that precious few dealers in my experience will actually do the valve clearances on diesels. Not too many customers would pay for it is the excuse I've been given. I've been doing my own since I was 17. My first was a double overhead cam Alfa Romeo..fun :-)
