Did a rear tyre over Xmas period & had to put the spare on left rear, which had not been used. Have been told not to have on the rear as other tyres have done 30,000K and new tyre can cause diff problems. Fact or fiction????

Would also like to thank those who responded with their constructive points in my purchasing of a camera for SWMBO. I finally setttled on fuji 6500 (6.5 megapixels), and she is wrapped with it 28/300 zoom excellent and the macro some of the pictures of flowers that she has had printed are excellent.
Thanks again for those comments.

It will only cause problems if the tyre is a different size, If the tread pattern is different it can cause handling problems in some instances too.

Nugget, have you looked at the rolling diameter of the two tyres? If they are close you shouldn't have too many problems despite the Nissan LSD being about the best of the business. It would probably be best on the front however, better for steering too.

With a 30,000km difference, there may be a significant difference in the rolling diameter of the 2 tyres on the rear axle, which may in turn cause the LSD to work overtime.. As mentioned above, I like to keep the tyres on the rear axle as close as possible to the same diameter..

The advice that has been given to me in the past, is that if a single new tyre has to be mixed with others that have significant wear, then the new tyre should go on the LH front.. I see no reason to dispute this..

re the camera... Is this the S6500fd ?? May I ask how much ya paid?
Looking at these myself, & trying to determine what is a "good price" ;-))

To Ed C, the spare is the original as are the other tyres, all the same tread and size, just the mileage difference.
In relation to the camera, it is the 6500FD and was $600 all up including a 1gb Xd picture card from Good Guys,Midland (WA)

Nugget, to have a different sized tyre, is effectively like permanently cornering, because them two wheels will be turning at a different rate. This puts unequal pressure on the diff and places additional stress and wear on the bearings etc. The wear is a gradual thing, so you are not going to kill the diff if you can't get a new tyre over the new year period. I wouldn't go driving from Melbourne to Perth like this, but normal driving will do no harm.

If you are running original equipment tyres that came with the Patrol new, then they only have a life of 50-60,000 km anyway (if you are lucky). Other brands may have a life of upto 80,000 km, so your tyres will be 30 - 60% worn. Why not buy a matching tyre and put the worn one on the back door?

All the best for the new year.
Keep the shiny side up.

Why dont u try and get a second hand tyre? The tyre place here can get them for you and they can match the tread pattern sometimes too, not a bad effort.

I have some BFG All Terrrains in 265/75-16 size and the rolling diameter is about an inch (25mm) different new to 50000km on them
