Well good folks thanks for all the advice over the past several months. Troopys now ready whether we are or not. Went for front diff lock, Canon 400d, full length roof rack, 100 lts internal water containers, 2x 65w BP solar panels, engel, complete fitout to own design. 'No fly zone' on rear for food prep in peace, theft 'proof' tyre locker on roof - yep and even a dunny (using bio magic tablets)

Tyre Pressures now a modest 36-40psi!!

Heading west towards Mungo, Hattah, before slower paced tour along the Bight and inland to the the SW coast and then coast to Kimberley etc --- Time unknown 12months? Who knows. Aiming at about an equal number of zigs and zags

All the best - will check in occasionally

Chris

HI Richard

NFZ is an annex approx 1950mm long x 1400mm wide 1900mm high made of silver coated material (commonly used for dome type tents) and very fine fly mesh also found in dome tents.
Its aluminium folding frame (25mm sqaure tube) anchors to attachments on rear sides of the troopys roof rack. The material hugs the sides of the troopy and encloses the rear doors and is pinned to the ground. It is not fly proof nor was it intended to be. Rather it gives respite from them during meal preparation, keeps the sun/rain off the rear while cooking etc. Little recognised fact is that flies don't really want to be inside - spend their time inside wanting to get out through windows. Have used this idea to exclude the vast majority - yet allow those that do come in (eg on your back) to leave.

Sorry have experienced delays getting my digital camera - so no pics at this time.

Now at day 31 and loving it.

Half your luck Chris, safe travels.

BTW am looking at a diff lock for my troopy. I know this subject has been beaten to death, but....what was your reasoning for putting one in the front??

Cheers
Michael

I've broken a few rules on this.
I look on the difflock as the first resort for getting OUT of trouble - not into it. Reasoned that:
1 I drive gently - never use force - and have never suffered the oft cited 'LSD failure'
2 all my past driving in a prado with standard LSD had been very successful
3 the troopy LSD should deliver (for me) much the same performance
4 therefore do not discard the rear LSD; instead improve the free front diff

I was also attracted to the idea of one respondent to my question on this who also advised this configuration. His argument was that the rear difflock meant that you had to give up a very handy LSD for general track driving.

Cannot advise on its value at this stage - though it has been used a couple of times on soft silt following Flinders Ranges deluge

Best regards

Hi Phillip

See my response to earlier question on NFZ - it's my own design and construction. Second prototype - first used on Prado for several trips. This one has withstood quite severe storms on Murray last week.

Best regards
