IN MY OPINION A GOOD HAND WINCH IS THE WAY TO GO.
IT IS A BIT MORE HARD WORK BUT YOU CAN PULL YOUR SELF BACK WARDS AND EVEN SIDE WARDS . SOME TIMES FORWARD CAN GET YOU INTO MORE TROUBLE.
I LIKE TO TRAVELL WITH A COUPLE OF OTHER 4* 4 S SO YOU CAN SNATCH EACH OTHER OUT.

Eric, you beat me to it! I have your video. I like it a lot! I reckon the Surf would have done better with a good set of tyres.

Your surf will do it easy, There are a lot of single car travellers and jion up with someone for the telegragh track the rest is easy. The good thing is there are alwys people along to give you a hand out of bogs and creeks.
watch out for on coming traffic
If you get stuck the other travellers will pull you out because they will need to get past and most of the the telegragh is 1 car traffic

Hi David,
I did Cape York in a stock NG 1991 (original Shape) pajero 3l petrol. No problems at all, apart from getting bogged once. Avoid the Development Road at all costs. It is corrugated beyond belief and boring as hell. The Overland Telegraph track is so much fun I cant wait to go back.

Only two real tricky spots. Palm Creek and Gunshot. Gunshot can be bypassed if you want and Palm has many good places to attach a winch if need be. Palm is quite early in the piece and often causes alot of travelers to turn back and go the develpment road, dont be put off it really is one of the more tricky creek crossings and once acrros the going is fine.

I did the trip alone and had a ball. A good quality hand winch is essential along with tree trunk protector and extention strap etc. Take it easy check all crossings on foot first and you wil love it.

On my trip I actually came across a surf bogged very badly. No recovery gear, not even a snatch strap. I felt very tempted to leave him there, but didnt.

I read a 4x4 magazine a few years back showing photos of two sedans fully jacked that made it to the tip. It was a big selling feature for the vehicle - I'm pretty sure they were BMW's or something sporty like that. They looked weird as.
Admittedly they must have scoured the tracks for days making sure the track was at it's easiest.

Not only that but I would guess the cars would be pretty messed up after doing it a few times.Sedan manufacturer try hards trying to abolish the reason for 4x4s. Will never work.Love the bush.
