Camp site 234 Cangai Bridge(NSW), page 105 shows camping beside Mann River. If you decide to camp at this beautiful spot be aware there are signs from the Grafton Rural Lands Protection Board banning camping.Being a member of a 4wd club affliated with the 4wd assoc, we had written permission to camp there. This rule also applies to the Motor Home Assoc.
We had a very enjoyable camp there after Xmas.

Just curious: how come members of the general public are not permitted to camp on (what sounds like) public land but if you belong to the clubs you mention, you are - if you happen to know Vince?

Hi Mike.
The land in question is described as travelling stock route. Apparently our small group was the only ones with authority to camp there. It did not seem a problem to the other groups who did not have official permission. You would have to take the matter up with the rural lands protection board.

Ah. If it's a "stock route" the restrictions may be historical in order to control the number of stock on the route. Thanks Vince

Hi Vince,
Camps has a website from which you can download amendments to their book. I guess they would also like to receive feedback from readers. Why don't you contact the authors and pass on your information? That way it would get to all their readers.

Hi all,

I am not sure of the other states but up here in Qld I have seen about a dozen camsites that have been listed in the Camps Australia Wide book close down now. Main reason is due to being so popular that the area cannot support the amount of people that it sees. An example is Gregory River near lawn hill that was shut down this year due to the amount of rubbish left behind by campers.

The rubbish used to be removed by council workers from Bourketown travelling down once a week to clear however they were travelling down nearly everyday this year because the rubbish increased significantly.

Even though the CAW book is quite a valuable reference, it can also have a negative impact in some cases.

Another upside is that it has also provided valuable tourist dollars for some smaller towns that have put in free camping to attract travellers.

Just my observations.

Regards
David

Hi David.
I totally agree. I have just updated the amendments to the Camps Aust wide camp book.It appears that the free camp spots are really being mistreated & there is pressure from local business owners to have tourists stay in the towns.
I went past the Gregory river in 2005 & was amazed at the number of camp sites under the bridge next to the river.
Regards.
