Hi there:
I am trying to repalce the original battery on my GU3.0 TurboDieselNissan Patrol, but the battery shield gets in the way! How can I get the shield off as it is attached to a black plastic tube (=vent?) running out to the car body.

Best regards

Buy a genuine Nissan replacement battery which has a new shield and costs three times what a battery costs from a retailer, I'm only joking!!!
Seriously though the plastic surrounds on other batteries and vehicles usually just lift straight up and off or have a clip where it joins so it wraps around the battery.

I replaced mine with a Delkor sealed battery and removed the shield completely.

Yep, just pull the tube off the shield and whack in the new battery. As long as it's a N70zz it doesn't matter which brand.

My 4.5 Petrol is the same as above.

The cover just clips over the battery.

I would say all the Patrol batteries are indentical in this issue.

Give the shield the flick it makes it nigh on impossible to check fluid levels, did that on my 3.0L and never looked back, actually I tell a lie, I looked back once and saw Lucy pulled over on the side of the road out of diesel or fixing trailer breaks or checking under thr Droopy for breakages etc etc etc

Yep agree. Get rid of the shield. Had to replace the battery in my 4.2 and when I removed the shield it was full of dirt and crap. Didn't really appear to be doing anything rather than collecting dirt. Been 12 months now and the replacement battery is still nice and clear all around. There's never been a shield fitted on the opposite side of the motor for the second battery so can't see why the starting battery warrants one.

If possible i would keep the sheild & vent tube

Back in the 80's HJ75 landcruisers had a problem in hot areas where you would drive for hours & turn the engine off & when you went to restart it the battery was flat

Toyota said what was happening was because of high under bonnet temps (and battery temp) the battery would not accept charge from the alternator

The production fix was to encase the battery in a sheild that was vented to the outer guard to reduce battery temp (on existing vehicles with the problem the fix was to add the sheild only)

The sheild is there for a reason & if possible i would retain it

That problem was mainly due to the fact that toyota in their infinite wisdom put the battery about 4 inches from the exhaust manifold. Yes it did prevent starting until you had about three stubbies waiting for it to cool down.
