Hi all, need some advise please. We are both fortunate enough to have the Australia Day long weekend free (this is rare occurence these days) and would like to camp. In the past we have camped and fished all along victoria's east coast however we now have a dog so most of past spots are now off limits. We have NEVER camped along vic west coast. Any suggestions? No caravan parks. I understand that most places will be busy etc which we will cope with in order to get away for a couple of days. We normally camp in winter to avoid the crowds (and the flies) but at the moment it has been too long between drinks and we would love to be able to take the dog with us. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Try the Lower Glenelg national Park. With the dog you could camp in one of the camping grounds in Nelson and drive or walk to the river or the sea. You would need to ring Victoria Parks booking office (0887384051) or the rangers office (0887384500) to find out about where you could take the dog (most of the river in in the national park)

Hi gougmac. Are you sure about the dog? The parks vic website says dogs are not permitted anywhere in the park.

The caravan park at Nelson also has a very large camping area in a pleasant bush setting. Dogs might be OK there. Most if not all the other camping areas around there are in NP so no dogs. There is quite a bit to see and do around Nelson.

Camped at Pritchards recently, good spot, fishing, swimming, boating and the missus loved the flushing dunny. Good central spot to Nelson, Mt Gambier, Portland etc. And we will be back there late April sometime.

The Henty Bay Beach Caravan Park at Portland is right on the beach & has a very secluded bush camping area & dogs are most welcome, I have just come back from 10 days there & couldn't recommend it highly enough!

BTW we are usually High Country campers but with the fires ...........

Shaker that is very reassuring to hear. We are normally high country or gippsland coast as well so are definately looking for the privacy and seclusion of bush camping. So Henty Bay hey. I saw it on the web and was wondering about it, how close are the bush sites to other campers and the beach? How many people head past your site?

It's obviously not as secluded as true bush camping, but they have some quite secluded spots, just ask when you book for one like Paul from Tyers had.
Distance from the beach depends on which spot you are on.

We stayed overnight at the Saw Pit camp site in the Mt Clay forest, inland and east a bit from Portland - 4 kms NW of Narrawong. A big free bush camp site, with drop toilets in very good condition. Dogs allowed. A short forest walk comes to an old whalers lookout across the coast.

I got an email from travelling friends, who decided to call in and spend Christmas there. There stayed on and are still there.

G'day
Johanna Beach west of Apollo Bay is the greatest spot for dogs & people.
It is Nat Park but dogs are allowed! We spent 6 days around Easter last year with our 3 dogs & walked daily for miles on the beach. Check it out on the Vic Nat Park (DSE?) website to make sure dogs are still allowed. Gates etc to real people are being closed everywhere!

Hi Lindsay, thanks for that. I have been considering Johanna Beach. We have been there a couple of years ago - just a pass through, not camping and I recall that the campsites were not very sheltered/shady. Is my recollection right? Also what was the fishing like? Did you see many people fishing? Was it busy while you were there at Easter?
